Fuel to injector pump, but won't start. Solenoid and injector questions

/ Fuel to injector pump, but won't start. Solenoid and injector questions #21
That's my plan at this point. I plan to pick up a fresh 5 gallon can tomorrow. I'll get the on-road kind so the dye doesn't interfere with seeing the condition of things. I figure I'll disconnect the tank behind the first filter (before the lift pump) and plug that temporarily, then feed the lift pump from the fresh fuel, with a de-icer additive. (Diesel 911?) And yes, I do have a heat gun and a portable room heater that should warm up the filters, lift pump, injection pump, and injectors.

If I can get it running I'll let it idle a good bit to warm everything up well.

Then I'll tackle de-watering the rest of the fuel. Tractor tank first, then the barrels.

I've been using a water-absorbing filter on the fuel pump. I think I probably need to add a seperator with a glass bowl so I can keep an eye on things, and just have the absorber as a 2nd stage.

Sound like a plan? Any recommendations on additive?

Napa in Winchester has something (like a sock?) you can stick a fuel tank to remove water. They are up at the counter closest to the batteries. That may work for your barrels when they thaw out.

Cool. I was just reading about those, and that's my favorite auto parts store. I'll check that out.

Is a 100 gallons worth of questionable diesel worth messing with? Do you know how old it is? I agree, for the long term I added a Racor to mine, I'd do the same if I were you. There is a couple of good threads on it.

The fuel was clean when I got it, and I know how the water got in. As mentioned, I've been on my boys about it, aand I'm oing to make some changes to my setup to prevent it happening again.

Right now my plan is to wait until Friday, due to the weather. I get above freezing on Tuesday, and stay that way for a while. I'll have a few days of above freezing to melt any ice in there, and then I'll treat with Diesel 911 from a fresh supply as mentioned above. That will give me some time to pick up a water separator, too.

If you have access to an air compressor, blow those lines out, and blow off the connection on the pump & injectors..
I think the damage is done already tho, if you cant get the pump to squirt on all cylinders w/ the lines loose.

Yep, doesn't look good.

I'm OCD about fuel. Wouldn't think of using fuel out of a tank given to me by someone.

Hope a simple solution appears. Removing the pump for repairs is going to be very expensive...... :(

I do have a compressor, so I'll take your advice on blowing out the lines. Waiting for things to thaw out now....

The smaller Kubotas aren't a high pressure direct injection system so I'd think as soon as everything thaws out and the water is out of the system, it will run fine. Someone makes a funnel that won't let water pass through it, maybe called the Mister Funnel or something like that??

Thanks for the feedback. I should know after a few days of thawing. Looks like Thursday is my best day.

IT LIVES!

Success!

:D

My heartfelt thanks to all who helped out, and even offered off-line coaching!

Here's what I did.

  1. Drained the Kubota's tank. (See picture of the first gallon to come out. Nasty.)
  2. Attempted to blow out the lines with compressed air, but that didn't work. Nothing came out of the injector lines. It all went back to the tank via the return lines.
  3. Added fresh diesel treated with Diesel 911 and Diesel Kleen. Double dosage per instructions on their web site.
  4. Reconnected tank, and used the lift pump to purge the old fuel out. I connected a clear vinyl line after the 2nd filter so I could see what was coming out.
  5. Reconnected fuel line to injector pump.
  6. Connected 3/3" ID vinyl hose to each injector line, and ran them into a container.
  7. Cranked the engine to purge out the injection pump. I cranked for 10 seconds, then let the starter cool for 30-60 seconds.
  8. At first there was fuel coming out of #1 injection line only, and not much of it. After about 5 or 6 cycles of this, I was getting good flow out of each injector line.
  9. Reconnected injector lines.
  10. Fired it up. I have it 25 seconds of glow plug, and it hesitated at first then fired up. (See video, below.)

I've got it running now. It's been about a half hour and I think that's probably good enough.

Here's the flow just before starting:
