Your right with a manual transmission we don't need idling time to warm up the hydro fluid, but the engine itself takes 15 or 20 minutes at high idle (1200 rpm+) to warm up when it's -30 out (filling the yard with white smoke while it's at it). Around here most people do warm up their vehicles for 5 or 10 minutes before driving as well. Maybe longer if it's a diesel that hasn't been plugged in (and you can even get it started ...)
I didn't have block heater in the tractor last winter, but I've since put one in, so it should be better this year ...
As far as why anyone in their right mind would live here ... I've wondered the same about those in the south east where the hurricanes have been causing havoc this year. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
