I have a YM2000 with the original fuse block and fuses (looks like thin wire). Has anyone changed over to any of the standard automotive fuses and fuse block? If so it would be nice to have details.

Thanks in advance.

JRB,
I haven't done it, but considered it on my YM1700. After market fuse blocks are available at most Auto parts houses. Or you could get extravagant with this one from

Upgrading the fuse block is very do-able. You have a choice of the old glass stlye or the plastic push-in style, Regular or mini fuses. Some have a cover, some don't.
Some replacement fuse blocks have both B+, and Ign+ sections, but not all do. Figure out what you need/ want, and search for what you need from that point. The place you go to may not have available exactly what you desire. Some fuse blocks can be "Reconfigured" to your needs. By that I mean that you can change which fuses are Batt hot at all times=B+,and which are Ignition hot=Ign+.
Sure beats disassembling, then soldering the fuse wire from a glass fuse onto the screw eyelets to make replacement fuses!
Alt, horn, gauges, lights, signals, strobe, electric rad fan, backup lights, heater motor, wipers, radio?
You may want to limit the number of fuses due to space and size limitations however! A second fuse block
can be mounted anywhere you have room.
Hope this was of some help....Lloyd /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I did it on my 1500d and took only a couple hours. Radio Shack and a 4 place holder for 2 or 3 bucks and it even mounted to the original location.

Lloyd, thanks for the tip on using the wire out of a glass fuse...DUH /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif...Haven't needed one, but was wondering where to get it when I did.

Your welcome for the tip! Back in the 70's, some of the Japanese cars & pickups had the same style of fuses.
Neither the dealers or aftermarket had them on hand...so the first couple of replacement fuses I needed where made like this.
Breaking the glass from the fuse is easy enough but to get the fuse wire out in one peice, unsolder the fuse wire from the end caps. A 30watt soldering iron works slow but good. The 100-200 was a lot faster, but more attention has to be given when "reconnecting" the fuse wire to the eyelets! IT'S REAL EASY TO MELT AWAY THE FUSE WIRE!
Upgrading the fuse holder to any of the newer styles is the way to go however. Some even have covers!

I've had to do that 'unsolder glass fuse thing' too.. I've noticed that you don't even have to break the glass.. after a few moments ont he soldering iron, the end caps will float off..

Also, another method is a piggyback. We used to do this on dedicated electronics systems that had hardwired fuses on the motherboard.. couldn't get in at them well to remove the old fuse.. so you soldered jumper legs ont he old fuse, and attatched a new one right on top of it.. or even soldered a standard holder on top of it.

Hey there soundguy!
More recently, last few years at least, I've been using the weather-proof inline fuse holders for the ATO style fuses.
These are the fully encased units with the attached cap. You can get them in all 3 sizes, mini, regular, maxi.
I use them on circuits in trunks, off road equip., trailers, tractors, etc. Anywhere that it could get exposed to the weather, dirt,or water from power washing. Figure do it right, probably overkill, but none have failed.
What few "piggy-back" fixes I've done where basically the same. But after awhile my eyes get tired of using the 2.5 power magnifing headset. Smallest being one of the two fuses on a hard drive.
2 years & still spinning!
Catch ya later. Lloyd

Hi. I see I've met somebody else who doesn't mind getting down and dirty in the surface mount world. I hear ya about the glasses, anti-static isolated and battery powered guns, etc. I havn't done the fuses on a HDD.. but did get to tinker with a tandy laptop. They had some surface mount fuses in resistor packages... had to file the point on my iron to get in there to insure to solder bridges.

Yeah, I like those all weather inline fuse packages too. I added one on my NAA for the lights. I try to only resort to the piggyback stuff when there is no/limited room, and not feasable to disassemble or remove from service, etc.

Nice talking at ya!
