Gage Wheels On My Rear Blade…Woo Hoo!

Nice work! Now I realize I'm going to need a welding machine (and lots of practice) if I'm going to attempt to "customize" equipment like that /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Just curious, was that TIG or MIG welded? Looks pretty darn good! BTW, you've sold me on gage wheels.

Nice set-up. Do you pull or push when welding with the MIG? Seems from here like your pulling but it would give even better penetration when you push with the MIG.

Henro,

Nice welding job!

Do you have some pictures of how you added the gage wheels to your landscape rake?

I am planning on copying your idea's.

JD4600 with 460FEL with pallet fork and 7'6" Western Snow Plow, JD LX279, 84" KK finishing mower, 84" KK Landscape Box, 84" KK Landscape Rake, 84" KK Blade, and 72" KK Bush Hog, 7' Northern Tool Backhoe, Bri Mar 6X10 Dump Trailer, 20' Rugged Road Equipment Trailer.

Really looks good Henro.

Sure beats the sorry looking set up I got.

That's what I'm picking up today. I'm trading my 6 footer in on a 7 ft.
I was looking at how I was going to rig my setup for guage wheels yesterday when I decided the blade wasn't wide enough for my new tractor. I was wondering who would be first to go ahead with the mod.
Nice job! Mine's going to be a little different. I hope to get into town and pick up the materials today.

JD2210va, it's TIG. Would like to have a MIG but don't do enough welding to warrant having one. TIG is nice for me because it is quiet and odorless, so I can weld in my basement during winter. I don't weld enough to worry about the argon displacing too much O2, and do open a door now and then (basement above ground) just to be sure.

Dolo, never welded with a MIG. TIG is neat in that you actually melt the metal in advance of adding the filler, so you are pretty sure you end up with a sound weld and good peneration. Hope saying that does not jinx my welds!

Gcrabb, I will attach a photo of the wheels on my landscape rake. It is a KK kit and just bolted on. For the blade, I bought a couple 2.5 inch pieces of mechanical tubing as I mentioned above, and "hung them in space" similar to the position they are on with the rake.

Egon, the picture you posted a while back of your rear blade and wheels was the inspiration that got me moving on adding wheels to mine! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

FredS, will the extra six inches on each side be enough with your L3130? I found myself wishing for a little more sticking out the side beyond my tires when using the blade in the dirt yesterday. I think a 7' behind my B2910 would give me that, but I am not sure if a 7' behind a L3130 would.

The wheels enable the blade to be controlled so it takes very light cuts, so it looks like a blade that would be too big (wide) for ones tractor could be used for things like snow/light scraping when wheels are attached. Just a thought...Guess I will have to try that 6' blade on the BX and see what happens...

henro,

What brand/model welder do you have? I'm taking a class now, really digging the TIG machines (various Miller models at the school).

An AC/DC TIG/Stick machine is the most versitile - it will weld any metal. A MIG machine is much faster - important in a production environment.

By the time you add a spool gun to a 200 amp MIG, you could have bought a TIG welder (Miller Synchrowave 180 or Lincoln 185).

Is there any adjustment on the guage wheels for height?

Well, it could always be more and I never angle the blade to the max setting, but I don't want to go too wide or I don't think it will follow the contour of my drive as well and the extra hp I have over my old tractor will get eaten up with pushing more material. At least that's the way I'm looking at it. The 6 ft blade was definitely too small though.

How do you like this...
I picked up the 7 ft blade a couple of hours ago. After getting it out of the trailer, I had one HECK of a time hooking it up to the 3pt. I ended up having to take the one pin out that lets the blade pivot from side to side. I finally get it on and there is a twist in the square tubing throwing everything out of whack. There's about 5 inches difference from one end of the blade to the other. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif *Nice*
I just got off the phone from the dealer and they are seeing if they have another one in stock.
Ever hear of this?

Freds sounds to me like someone dropped that one off the trailer before it got to you. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Glad that the dealer is taking care of the problem for you.
