Great pics. It's amazing how the deer and those racoons get along and eat so close to each other. I really liked the picture of the buck, but then saw the next picture of two bucks!!! That's awesome.

Funny how our attitude has changed. In January we were exited about every picture we captured on our game cam. Each picture of a wild hog was a treasure. Today we downloaded over 400 pictures and deleted about 380 of them.

Mostly we're having fun identifying the hogs, timing them when they are out and picking out certain ones that Steph wants to shoot. It's also fun emailing the pictures to friends and family to show them what the recent activity is like. Of course, Steph's brother has been here a dozen times when the hogs have been real active without seeing any. Her cousin has been here half a dozen times and hasn't gotten one yet either.

Here's a few fun pics of the hogs at the feeder.

I think you should name that last one "Hampshire" or "Hamp". It is very similar to the hampshire breed except that the stripe is too wide and too far back. It doesn't look right mixed in with the others.

I have seen no sign yet at our property, but the owner of a larger piece of bottomland 4 miles upriver from us told me has had them for a couple of years now. Both places are large and partly covered with brush. His place is on the river, whereas our is slightly off of the river on a tributary. I'm still thinking I will see signs in the next few years.

Any ideas on how fast they populate nearby areas?

Scott,

If you know they are four miles away, I'd think you have at least a few in your area. They tend to wonder around allot and that's not very far.

In my experience, they group up and stay in an area for awhile, then for whatever reason, they will move on. Sometimes my corn will rot on the ground for a month or two without any activity. Other times, I'm overrun with hogs.

I've read stories, and they are just that, stories witout anything to back them up, that in ideal conditions, a sow can have three litters a year. From what I've seen with sows and piglets, I think two is about it, but that's still allot of new animals coming into the area every year. Two litters of six animals will make a huge difference in the population in just a few years!!! Especially when there are dozens and dozens of sows in the area.

Having them arond is really fun, but if I had a choice, I'd rather not have them and hopefully have more deer. We rarely see any deer here and I think the hog population has allot to do with it. Of course, it's allot of fun to shoot them, eat them, take pictures of them and just watch them. Lately I've started trying to see how close I can get to them without scaring them off. Last week I was about 50 yards away, but it was too dark for pictures. It's fun when you can hear them really good!!!!

I'm a little torn. I'd enjoy looking for them and hunting them, but we harvest pecans off of half of our 150 acres, and hog damage would add to my workload during parts of the year. (Kind of like having deer and ticks vs. no deer/no ticks.)

I think that so far I have not seen signs of them because they don't leave the mile or so of dense cover on either side of the nearby river (plenty of food and cover). I'm sure that once the numbers increase, some would venture across the clearer areas to our place, and they would probably enjoy it enough to stick around.

Right now there are not many areas near the river that are not under water (including half or our place), so for the next week or so I'll keep my eyes open.

You mention the deer population there. I see numerous deer just about every day I am working at the farm, and lately I see turkeys half of the time also. (As long as I don't move towards them, they all let me get within about 100 yards, the turkeys even closer if I'm on the tractor.) In 1990 there were no deer around the place, and no turkeys until 4 or 5 years ago. Amazing what food and cover can do for them over a few years.

Well....I new that first picture was going to be difficult to pick out the 'ugly duckling', the outsider, the duck in the swan outfit....oops :D.
Here's another picture from a slighty different view....it may be easier to see the imposter in this picture.
