garbage truck pump on logsplitter

I have bad short term memory and concentration issues, so to keep from 'spacing,' I have to be kind of ****. It's a challenge. Makes me a PITA for anyone I work with. I have to run my AR system just to survive and have any peace of mind.

===========

I used a few galvy fittings on my wood splitter about ten years ago. I hope I haven't done myself harm. Thinking of swapping them out before next spring. You sure can learn a lot here.

Update. I have put 12 hours on the splitter, 1-1/2 tanks of fuel, and made a bunch of wood. nice stacked pile is 8 foot tall, 18' long, and 9' out from the back wall, it's all split wood except for the very front corner is just cut up small rounds. For reference, the other pile is 6' tall, and took 45 min to make by myself. I re ground the wedge, to change the angle a bit, and it works better than ever.

Glad it's working out! Now that you have this monster source of hydraulic power, how about putting it to some real use like a homemade skidder/dozer/excavator or something?

Just one question, How do I mount this setup on something else, or do I drag it behind?

The nice thing about a hydraulic system is that it's all discrete components connected by pipes/hoses. You can configure it however you want. You can make a frame with 4 rigid wheels with a hydraulic motor at each wheel with skid steering. You can make an articulated frame and use hydraulic motors to drive conventional axles. The engine+pump can mount wherever you want a counterweight. There are some homemade tractor threads here on TBN. Also you can search Youtube and see all kinds of homemade machines.

Some neat stuff in Farmshow magazine too.

I have no real use for anything like that, anyway. So...Coming up on 25 hours.

Anyone with a commercial built splitter, I would like to know what your manual says about the FIRST hydraulic fluid change. I was figuring that I should change it at 25 hours, and then every 200 after that. I am currently running Generic DEX III, because I usually do most of my splitting in the winter, and ATF flows much nicer in the cold than say AW 32. And, at $42/5 gal bucket, it is about $3.00/bucket less than AW. Besides, ATF SHOULD have more anti corrosion and foam additives. 25 hours may seem low for a change, but consider that I have had the fluid out of the system, and back in several times during the build of the splitter. First filter (10 micron) change after 20 minutes of running had the filter media a dark brown, second filter change at 5 hours showed very little dirt at all. There were 2 complete drain and fills after that. Same fluid from beginning of build to now, other than the gallon replaced at each filter change, and lost fluid when I have fixed leaks. Yes, I know that it is a $180.00 oil change, but should be worthwile PM. Thoughts?

Here are some manuals. The Huskee/speeco manual just talks about changing the filter. Maybe not a bad idea, and inspect the color/smell of the fluid to determine if a change is due. Compare to the tractor service interval chart. Hydraulic filter after 1st 50hrs, then at 300 hr intervals. Of course a splitter will typically have a higher hydraulic utilization rate than a tractor.

If the splitter is stored outside and the tank is exposed to the night sky, you will get condensation in the tank and you probably will need the annual changes.
