JJ- Northern Item 2102727

1800 rpm-25.9 gpm
3600rpm max speed 51.8
max psi 3625

I fixed the only oil leak. I found the dipstick tube was leaking at the oil pan. Cleaned it up and siliconed it, not a leak anywhere else on the whole splitter. That engine was really dirty inside, I have changed the oil for the second time, and it seems to be staying clean now. I have to change the coolant again, The radiator was boiled and repaired before I installed it, but there is a lot of rust in the block itself. All it had in it for the last 2 years was water, because all of the coolant has to be removed before the derby. These Ford I 6 Motors are indestructible. (not the same engine)-The neighbor hit a rock out in the field, and tore a hole in the pan, running his truck out of oil. He never realized it until he checked oil in the morning, and found none. His field is a 10 minute drive from the house, and he was pulling a wagon home that night. Replaced the pan, filled it up, and he ran it for another 5 years before the truck rotted so bad that the seat fell thru the floor onto the frame.

At max pump pressure of 3625 psi, push force would be about 70 ton.[/QUOTE]

SO... Then I need a valve with a higher releif setting:D

You should never get to that pressure splitting wood, unless you hold the lever for the full extended stroke, or the retract mode. Just set the log splitter relief valve to max.

You said the relief could go as high as 3000 psi.

Do you know what the max cyl pressure is? You might have a limitation there.

Max is all the way bottomed out on the screw, or do I turn it back a little from tight. The reason I ask, Is no one around here, including the Ford/NH, Case, OR JD dealers have a 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/4 Tee to let me install a gauge. I set up my line for it with a 1 foot piece, coupling, then a longer piece. They only go to 1/2, and say they can't adapt down from 3/4 to 1/4. I can't figure out how they check pressure without such a setup.

No, I really do not know what the cyl max pressure rating is. Assume=*** u me, BUT, I assume it is high, just by lookin' at it. 2-1/2 thick end blocks, and 3/4 diameter tie rods, not to mention that the rod is 3.5 inches solid thru. Redneck way of knowing if it'll hold-It aint broke yet, must be ok. Not trying to make a cylinder splitter, only a log splitter.

In all reality, I don't want to go over 3000 psi, because I don't ever want to have to rebuild my cyl, (Read-have it rebuilt and pay someone to do it.) That will cost more than the whole project. Besides, It can't be rated less than 3000 psi, anyways.

I will post a picture if I ever get the 8N hood I want on it.

JJ-you have been very helpful, Thank you for your paitence and assistance, Mike

I dont know why they wouldnt be able to adapt you down fron 3/4 to 1/4:confused:

I would try stopping by whoever is your local hydraulic hose shop/supplier.

Any hydraulic shop should be able to adapt your setup to run a guage with very little effort

Looks good to me. Just curious what you are doing with the I6 exhaust, is the setup loud to run?

Ld1, My local hydraulic shop is the 3 implement dealers, I don't have any dedicated shops nearby. I don't think I'll bother with a gauge, anyways, If I can't split something, then I'll turn up the releif slightly until it splits

KubotainNH, The I-6 motors are not too loud without an exhaust, nothing like a V8, but I am having the local exhaust shop make me an s pipe that will go down and thru the frame, and out under the hydraulic tank. Don't want a stack, because I am afraid I might hit it with the tractor or something, and will not work well with the hood setup I have envisioned. I was going to get a ford 8N exhaust, but it does not bend the way I need it to, I can have one custom bent for a little more cost. I want to be able to hear over the sound of the splitter running, which was a big problem with the 11 hp Briggs at full throttle. I asked him to order me the quietest muffler he could find, said it should be less than $100 for all. Should be done Thursday AM.

Next problem, I bought the largest return line filter that Surplus center sells, and I blew the gasket when I started it up. How is this possible. How do I figure out what I need for the application. The filter is rated for 200 psi, My return line shouldn't exceed that, should it?
Surplus Center - 1-1/2" NPT 80 GPM RETURN LINE FILTER

Do I need a suction filter? Do I just give up on a filter? I couldn't find one on the garbage truck I was scrounging from and there isn't one on my tractors, either. What do I do?

I was looking at another post, and do not belive that there are any blockages anywhere in the system. I have been testing and running it with the hoses where the filter goes connected together without the filter in place, and everything worked like it should. Installed it tonight, and it blew out the seal. I've been changing oil and filters on equipment since 5th grade, so I don't think it is an instalation problem.

I have it before the cooler on 3/4" line, because it fits nicely where it is. Do I need to move it to after the cooler and install it on a larger line. Could a 3/4 line act like a blockage in this setup because of the fluid volume? Max return line size because of tank fitting size is 1". Will that be large enough?

I think you are building up enough pressure to blow the seals. There is a place on the filter housing to add a gage.

According to the hose sizing nomagraph, hose size should be about 2 in, or at least the size of the pump input hose .

You might also increase the filter size in microns, say from 10 to 25.
