I'll bet whatever it was it wont do it again! 
I would think it is tomato horn worms. I had 3-4 of them strip a pepper plant of all the peppers and leaves in a couple of days. By the time I noticed it, they were almost finished. I found 4 of them bigger than a middle finger still on the plant. I suppose they could leave "teeth marks" with their nibblers.

A Mexican Chihuahua. Those little suckers can pack the peppers away! Sorry, I have no real help.
