Garden question ? What animal would eat Jalapeno Peppers ?

I feed my Macaws dried peppers. They love them almost as much as a Chicken leg...

well would have never thought it but I was told today that rabbit's will eat hot pepper's . the way to know is wet the ground where they are so the rabbit track will show, that's how these people figured out what was eating their pepper's.

I was glad to read your post as I have the same problem. I had a jalapeño pepper plant with one pepper that was on it that was about 2 inches long. The next morning I'm out looking at the plant and the pepper is lying in the bed with bite marks on it and a chunk missing. I read some of the other replies but my plant was in a raised garden bed, about 3 1/2 ft. off the ground, so inaccessible to bunnies and it clearly had teeth marks. That same night they also pulled a romaine lettuce plant out and left the root exposed. I was leaning towards a raccoon as it happened at night or maybe a squirrel? Whoever it was returned and polished off the rest of the pepper a few days later.

I vote for slugs or snails. They will eat anything green. The do leave bite marks. Some varieties are up to 6" long so can do a lot of damage. They are only seen at night. Have a game camera? set to runs all night (slugs are too small and slow to trigger motion detectors).

Way back in time - about the time God made dirt - we had a large garden and my sister & I had primary responsibilities for weeding. We would always weed early in the AM - it was cool and we had the remainder of the day for other activities. We noticed that something was eating the green peppers.

It was my Mom's crazy poodle. When let out in the morning, he made a B-line for the garden - he only ate the green peppers. He was fortunate that my Dad allowed him to live.

My wife just brought in two Jalapeno Peppers from our garden that were half eaten....seeds and all and the teeth marks are visible....Now these are hot ones...I got the hiccups from one at dinner last night....So what critter can tolerate that heat ? I have never had that happen before...Not hot peppers....:confused3:

Deer. They are the first thing the deer eat in my garden. I can't get a pepper before the deer strip them off.

Last year, I had rabbits eat my Jalapeno pepper plants right to the ground... I was surprised, as it NEVER happened before... SO, I replanted them, and they got ate down again!

This year, I cut the bottom off pails, and put one down around every plant,

problem solved. The plants are above the pails now and nothing seems to want to eat "older" plants...

The pails make it MUCH easier to water the plants too!
