Gas cylinders on an angle?

Most LWS sell carts like this. The back wheels are just a kick stand to make moving around a little safer with less weight to hold onto. This cart is how many hospitals move their spec gases around.

Agreed. The lean back feature was designed for safer moving. It should be put in the upright position for storage and operation.

I designed this single cylinder cart to be laid horizontal with tank for transport. The entire unit can be strapped down easily. I use it for inert gases.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. I have never been in a welding supply store, I would have to Google LWS to find one. I'm sure Des Moines has several but I seldom travel that direction.

You'll find them in Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Mason City, Fort Dodge etc. I know all of those folks. Des Moines has 3. ( wife is from there) I always tell people she is from Iowa but you can't hardly tell. My shins hurt just thinking about saying it. Just a joke.

Acetylene is dissolved in acetone. The tank has a filler that absorbs and contains the acetone and the acetone absorbs the acet. This is the only way acet is safe to handle under pressure. We used panel trucks for service so had to lay the tanks down for transport. Always pulled the acet out first a set upright so the acetone could redistribute into the filler. Usually at least a half hour or more. Never had acetone in the gas stream. You will know if you do. Acetone will accelerate the break down of your hoses also. Play safe, don't use in horizontal position.

Ron, all true, and all covered in some of the links I posted back in post#7 - but I'm starting to realize that apparently the majority of readers only click on links that're you-tube movies, so it's good you pointed those facts out... Steve

Hey hey... I read through your posted material. Yeah, I might have dozed off a couple times  but I did learn that acetylene tanks are not empty but have a 'porous mass' or sort of sponge inside to hold the acetylene/acetone mixture. That was quite interesting.

Yeah, and acetylene tanks look so deceptively simple on the outside, sorta like a short fat argon or oxy tank -

but the REALLY cool tanks (pun intended) are the cryo tanks for liquid oxygen - besides the normal oxy cylinders, we had cryo tanks delivered about once a week for high purity requirements, plus filling portable cylnders - the tanks held about 120 gallons, they're basically a glorified thermos bottle. From liquid to gas at room temp the expansion rate is about 860:1. This means that a 120 gallon cryo tank will convert to about 13,700 cubic feet of O2, or close to 50 cylinders of 280 cubic feet.

Did I mention that they also LOOK really cool? :D ... Steve

I've seen what left of an acetylene tank after it exploded... they had one for a safety display in the welding lab... the side wall was peeled back like a banana... sometimes a good visual drives home the point best.

Also remember draw down rate is very important for cylinder safety.

If you look at the top of the neck on the acet tank near where the valve screws in you will see a flush 1/2" wrench sized bolt head. It's made out of lead so that in case of fire it will melt and the flame will shoot straight up instead of exploding. The old tanks didn't have this and were much more dangerous. When I worked for a large welding supply company they had the fill plant line up 500 old WS and WSL Acetylenes and 5 days before a certification law changed, They sold them to Mexico.
