Gas tank build.

Yeah, us hobbyist need all the practice we can get.;)

No backing gas, if it was stainless steel I would have purge the tank.
I used 1/16-inch E80S filler. I welded the outside first, of the bottom, sides, and ends. Then welded the
inside. I just welded the outside of the top. I really lucked out, not one leak!
I've fabricated a lot of fuel tanks and radiator overflow tanks that had to pass pressure test. We always put backing gas on them-that is why I asked. Just seemed to reduce the chance of leaks to almost zero. Used 1/16 x 309 filler rod. Just thought I'd pass this on.

Mysfyt, at this point I don't know. I can phone Miller Support with the serial number to see if it was installed at the factory. If not I'll have to take a look inside and compare with a parts diagram to see if it was installed later.

Reason I ask is that it cuts down the input amps from something like 112 to 84 or there a bouts. I had to upgrade my Lincoln 275 wiring when tig welding aluminum because of the amperage draw tripping the breaker. Is that a chiller that came with it?

Yes. But it is only a one gallon unit. Haven't looked into it in depth but I would think it would be too small for production use ( which I won't be doing anyways).

I built a 20 gal gas caddy 5+ years ago from 1/8" steel. I welded it up, filled it with water making sure there were no voids, pressurized it to 60 psi (yes, 60) and hung it from a hoist to check for leaks. I found a few so I drained it, dried it and re-welded, refilled it with water for another check. Got it this time. No problem with leaks. I did a similar project to make a gas tank for my Ford tractor. Instead of buying an expensive 14 gal tank, I made a 9 gallon one. No leaks there either.

Just built a skid for the Syncro and was servicing the chiller. I was wrong, it's a two gallon unit.

Pretty pathetic when you start quoting yourself. :D Terry

When a tank is made like the way shield arc made the corner welds a torch or tig welder can be used to melt or roll the two edges together and make a nice looking weld. Using a torch or tig welder you can see what you are doing as the two edges of the sheet are welded together. once in awhile there will be a bad fit with a corner weld and a little filler rod will have to be used. Sometimes a little filler rod will be used to start the weld too get the edges to melt together. I made a hydraulic tank not too long ago with six pieces of sheet metal, and made the corners like shield arc and used a couple inches of filler rod to get the tank welded up all the way around. My sheet metal was a little thicker that shield arcs though. Did not need to pressure test it because I could see the weld as I was putting it in and I was confident that it would not leak. I used oxygen/acetylene torch because I don't have a tig set up yet. I will post some pictures of the tank when I can figure out how to get them from one place to another so I can post them.
