What do you guys do for any thing more than 5 gallon cans? I wanna get something bigger but seems most things are rated for diesel and not gasoline. I was thinking of something like these. Amazon.com

If you look up the individual specifications below that page, it shows that that tank is diesel rated ONLY.

Very odd that the description says gasoline. Its my understanding that those 12v pumps are not designed for gasoline. I know when i bought my 50 gal poly fuel tank with pump it specifically says not for use with gasoline.

Yeah the first one says good for gasoline in multiple places but almost every other one I can find says diesel only. I really don’t know what the difference would be but I’m kinda iffy on the putting 50 gallons of gas in something that could very well be not made for gas at all. Anyone know what the difference between a gasoline one and a diesel one?

I suspect it's more a matter of certification of the tank itself, vapor recovery, and pump construction rather than the tank material itself.
I previously stored gasoline in a 55g drum with a manual crank pump. The purpose of storing my gasoline was for emergency generator use, and I cycled it into my vehicles every 2 years. Now that I have a pto generator, I store gasoline in (6) 5 gallon Jerry Cans for use each season in my walk behind and various trimmers.

I use these 14 gallon plastic caddies rated for gasoline, biggest I can still manhandle when full. I use gravity feed not the cheap handle pump. Had them over 5 yrs never much of a problem I own two and were pretty inexpensive back then, and I own, a non pictured gasoline rated metal with a manual vane pump it's 35 gallon I painted yellow and use solely for diesel. If it's a steel tank/nozzle used for gasoline it needs a ground clamp hooked to what your filling.

Its possible that the gas would dissolve the gaskets in the pump

If you use a lot of gasoline, a larger tank might be helpful, but be aware that gas with ethanol has a shelf life of around 3 months.

Unless you use enough to be able to get it delivered, you also need to be able to transport the heavy tank to fill it.

The tank you link has fork pockets, so if you have forks, it could easily be loaded on a trailer or pickup.

there is also the issue of safely filling larger gasoline tanks. You are supposed to remove them from the back of the truck/trailer and put them on the ground to fill, then lift back into the truck/trailer while full to transport. I'd really like to go with something like the 15 gal fast-flo cans, but there is no way to safely fill them with gasoline unless you have a crane hoist on your truck.

For gasoline, you will almost always see a warning like this, which defeats the purpose of using a large tank.
  • When filling a container, always place the container on the ground.
  • Never fill a container when it is in a trunk, in the bed of a truck, in a trailer, boat, utility vehicle, or on top of a vehicle.

I've got (2) 30 gal HYPE(?) drums I got from the local car wash. They had "caustic" chemicals (soap with additives) in them. They are thick walled, have 2 bung holes on top with rubber gaskets and have housed my gasoline needs for over 2 years. (I fill them up every month). Got the drums free from the car wash.

I bought a 12v 55 gal drum pump off ebay to pump the gas from the drums to the vehicles. I use our accumulated fuel points from our local grocer to get $1 off a gallon. Hence 2 drums to maximize our savings.

Works great. Save an avg of $70/month on gas by doing this.

When you guys are filling these larger containers from the bed of your truck do you mess around with any kind of ground strap?

I do have a tractor with forks so the weight is no problem. Maybe I’m overthinking it but I don’t wanna blow up at the gas station lol.

On mine its the pump itself. Its not rated for volatility of gas.
So maybe I could get a diesel tank and change out the pump rated for gas?

I use a ratchet strap to hold the drum in place in my pickup until I get it home. I have a 2x10x16' "ramp" that I use to slide the drum onto a roll-around dolly. If you're going to store it outside, then I'd put it up on some sort of platform, like a pallet, or 2x's to keep it off of the soil/gravel.

Is static during filling the container an issue? I’ve never experienced this filling 5 gallon cans but I keep reading that it’s a thing.

I was going through this myself. I contacted 3 local fire departments. One had no recommendation, and the other 2 said do what the manufacturer recommends (which is NOT fill in the bed of a truck) so I am still using 5 gal cans on the ground. Sucks.

30 gallon drum with crank pump or dedicated fuel caddy?

My carbureted service truck has a 34 gallon tank and I added a dispensing pump which conveniently covers my gasoline needs.

For Diesel I stay with 5 gallon containers.

Yeah the 14 gallon caddies are somewhat able for me to remove/ fill and place back in my beater hatchback for transport steel 35 gallon definitely not and use my single axle trailer with ramp but I only use that one for diesel anyway. I think gas weighs around 6 pounds a gallon so 14 of them is 84 lbs or so + weight of container empty. I pretreat all gas or diesel with additives and only fill gas caddy with ethanol free.

I have two of these. One for gas, one for diesel.

Same here, I have both strapped to a pallet to fork them in and out of my truck after filling.

I had to upgrade the cheap OEM hoses to real fuel hoses after 1 yr as the hoses on the gasoline side got brittle and started craking. While upgrading the hoses, I added a Goldenrod water block particulate filter to each.

Both hand pumps are still working on mine, but my brother had one go out on him after just over a year.

I store mine outdoors with a tarp over them, haven't had any issues other than the hoses.
