one other thing a lot of people overlook when they begin working with steel, is that it really behaves a lot like spaghetti.

I work more with wood then metal, and it also has similar limitations, but it's tougher to geta solid weld on wood then metal.

Back to the gat question. The triangles are sometimes very small. Imagine four pieces of steel that are 1/2 inch thick, 2 inches wide and four feet long. All identical. There are two ways that you can lay them to get a square gate, but one is going to be very week, and the other is going to be very strong. They will look totally different because the strong way will overlap at the corners. That overlap is where you have created yoru triangles.

If you wanted to make that square into a rectangle, you would have to add additional bracing the longer the rectangle becomes. You could put one massive diagnal brase from one corner to the otehr and easily have it 12 feet long, or you could have multiple triangles, or large corner triangles. It's all in the design and what you want it to look like.

Your Schedule 40 pipe and rod combination is good but you will need bigger rod. For BBQ pits I use schedule 40, 1/2' pipe but the best fit for the hinge rod is actually 9/16 inch rod. It's a perfect fit. I have never tried it but I would guess the 1 inch pipe would use a 1 1/8" or possible a 1 3/16 solid rod. You can play with it and see. The 1" to 1" combo you propose will work but it will be pretty sloppy.

If you are going to make your own hinges then I suggest going with tubing instead of pipe. I buy 7/8" round tubing with an 1/8" wall. It gives me perfect 5/8" I.D. It's a couple of bucks a foot but a twenty foot stick will last me three or four years. The other thing I use is one inch channel for making hinges. It gives you a better welding area while supplying good spacing between hinges and frames/posts.

I've been away, I check the site every day, because of current interests, the housing for the poor using recycled plastics.

In July I broke my right hand, stupid move on my part. Then about five weeks ago I busted up my left shoulder in a fall on a plow. Tuesday I go in for surgery. I have a complete tear of one tendon from the rotator cuff and a large tear of another. They won't know until they get in there whether they're going to reattach it too.

My options are to have about thirty percent use of my left arm above my ribs and a lot of pain or surgery. I'm going with surgery. Some might see 63 as too old to plan on doing what I do but then others will see 63 as too young to quit.

The good things is I'm in good health, no heart problems, diabetes, etc. I take no medicines, no alcohol or drug use, and I get a fair amount of exercise. The surgery is supposed to be its own kind of hades but the good thing is this is only the second surgery of my life. The first was for tonsils removal about thirty years ago.

I take some satisfaction in my only visits to the docs involves injuries, still being stupid after all of these years.

Sorry to hear about your accident and impending surgery. Good luck and speedy recovery prayers your way!

I'm definitely in this camp: others will see 63 as too young to quit.

Keep on keeping on!
