Wow... mine broke yesterday, too! Called the dealer, they had one of each of the two types in stock: one that has the same threads on both ends, the other that has a smaller thread on the valve end (which is right where it breaks off, of course!).

At any rate, I too welded the snapped-off end back on, but when I went to find a die to re-capture the two rows of threads I slobbered up, I find it's a "SPECIAL" size.....

Mine's the two-thread type. I didn't think they were metric, however- the knob end is 3/8 x 16 pitch, the valve end is 5/16 x 20 pitch. Seems like they're maybe Whitworth? Man, I haven't had to deal with Whitworth since I built a Jag 3.5-liter XK engine back in 1967!!

I was quoted $35 for the lever, BTW.

Yep, they're metric! Like an idiot, I didn't check my metric taps & dies to check for that before....:confused2:

My weld held OK to finish clean-up yesterday, but broke right off as soon as I tried to hit "float" today.

I found a suitable metric bolt, cut the head off it, then cut about 1/2" off the shaft and re-welded the thread section of the bolt onto the shaft --with gusto, this time (and clean steel)-- and it has held, so far.

Discovered the threads on the valve end of the shaft are 8mm x 1.25. All this in the middle of the forecasted 2-3" of snow... that turned into 10" and is still coming down! Of course, I had to hurry because wife and I needed to get out to go to a family Christmas/New Year's thing... oh well, never a dull moment! Just got back-- some real greasy roads out there.

Take care if you're driving in this area tonight! WBB

My orginal dealer quit selling MF 3 years ago ...... so I called the nearest dealer 45 miles away. They located one at the warehouse and will send it to my house. I took the broken handle - had a good friend weld a bolt end (8 x 1.25 mm) - then welded a sleeve over the splice. Temp fix until new part comes.

Took a drive to the dealer today and picked up a spare shaft. The part # listed above, 71516035, is what I got (the one with the smaller thread on the valve end), but I did see the other one- same thread on both ends. Must be the "new, improved" version; looks much less likely to snap off. Interestingly, that one had a sticker on it indicating it was made in Sweden.

So now I have a spare, but my second weld --using a cut off 8mm x 1.25 bolt-- appears to be holding up just fine. And the part was less than quoted- "only" $26.90. WBB

Masterful engineering, making it thinner, right were all the stress is. Who could see that as a potential problem? :confused2:

When mine breaks, I'll repair it, or make a new one.

My joystick broke also. Already fixed it once a couple years ago. Guess I will order a new one from Jacks.
