The filter shield does not have to be removed for filter service or to install the MMM. The side that faces forward is open.

I know it doesn't have to be removed
Just need a little bigger drain pan 'cause the fluid is gonna run all over it

Raise the back of the tractor as high as possible, this will help keep the oil in a more direct stream off the front edge. You could also try punching or drilling a hole in the front lower portion of the filter to drain it first. Many aircraft have an oil filter that cannot be removed without oil running all over the engine, in some cases a disposable diaper worked under the filter before removal does a good job of containing the mess.

Good idea on the diaper to catch oil, although my wife about slapped me when I suggested we should have another kid so I can I can keep the garage floor clean.

I bought the filter shield today, it cost me 158.00. I also had to remove the tires and drill throught two frames, because machine is a 2310. I added angle iron to front of shield to stiffen it and angle iron brace on left side, it still wanted to move before the bracing, even with shield against it's stops, but I used one bolt on each side. I should have used larger bolts or more bolts. I don't plan on mmm ,so extra brace under floor. My wife gets into some hairy spots, so I want it beefy. I like the skid plates, shield that Bro-Tek makes, but he makes them for another brand. plowking

I had mine in for maintenance couple months ago and had the the filter guard installed. I don't recall what he charged.

It does make connecting/disconnecting the mid pto a little more difficult though.
like that little sucka isnt hard enough to reach as it is hehe :D

I was able to get a price from my dealer here in Maine on the Filter Guard. He said it would be $62.00 plus an hour of labor to install. I think I will install it myself even though it requires some drilling. I have the tools so I might as well put them to work. I plan to do that in the next week or so. Thanks for all the info, guys.

Has anyone used a universal filter relocation kit and just moved it somewhere safer? I bought one with the intentions of doing so, but just hadn't had the time.

That may be an option, however, the filter adapter base would still be vulnerable to damage since it would be still just sitting there waiting for something to bash into it. Some sort of protection for this area would still be necessary.

I installed mine this morning - took about an hour and a half. I didn't use their bolts - I used 1/2 inch as an upgrade.

A caveat - be very careful where you are drilling on the left side, or you will hit a flex line.

If I had an impact wrench, it would have taken me less time. A shop with an experienced mechanic could easily do this job in a half hour - excluding BS sessions, smoke break, and coffee run.

Well, I finally got around to installing the filter guard on my GC2310 over the weekend. Not too hard of a job. Using the outriggers on the backhoe as jacks and using an impact to take off the wheels helped speed the process. I had to drill a couple of holes through the frame. Once I figured out that the drilling templates that came with the installation instructions were wrong, it was easy. Thanks for the caveat on the flex hose, Bill. I put a piece of wood between the frame and the hose so once I saw wood I knew I was through all the way. The whole job took me about an hour and saved me about $65 labor. The guard itself cost me $62.50. Now I can get busy mowing some brush and not worry about snapping off the filter.
