That is without question the weakest argument I have ever seen in my life.

After spending thousands on a tractor, people are so particular about the fluids they use until their warranty expires, the majority are afraid to even use anything except the exact products that were made, and used, by the manufacturer, even though lots of other products, that meet, or exceed, the specifications in the owners manual are available. In many cases, even after the warranty expires, they are not willing to use a different product.

As a matter of fact, it is very common to see new owners who are so concerned about the service being done properly, the don't even want to change the oil themselves.

In the event that someone could be feebleminded enough to purchase, and or, try to dump, any quantity of gear oil in their hydo, because they thought that they read it was okay, in my post. Keep in mind, they would also have to be somehow astute enough to know where the filler is.

Sorry to butt in . Where did the idea of using gear oil in the front diff instead of permatran start. I Just want to understand as to how it would be better than Amsoil ATH in the front diff. Walmart has a semi-synthnetic 75w90 ep lube for $5 a qt. Would this be better than Amsoil ATH? I am open to all kinds of info. That is why I am on this sight to learn.

You can't butt in on a thread from 2 years ago.

In many applications, hydraulic transmission fluid, ATF, and Gear oil, are all capable, and interchangeable.

Hydraulic transmission fluid has to do lots of different things. Gear lube is made for a single application.

If you have gears only, gear lube can handle higher pressures, than hydraulic transmission oil.

EP gear lube is made to handle the highest pressures.

All are capable of lubricating your front axle.

If you want to go for the maximum protection, use synthetic EP gear lube, but it may never make any noticeable difference which you use.

Not at all. I am comparing a 75w90 gear oil made in the USA to a Tractor/hyraulic(5w30) fluid by Amsoil. There has been alot of discussion about the benefits of running gear oil versus hydraulic fluid in the front diff. This is not the first thread about it, just an old one.

Amsoil WILL be heads above to any fluid, hyd wise. Now a hyd fluid has diff properties as a gear fluid, as it should; hence why people make two differance fluids. I would NEVEr use a gear fluid in a hyd app. Dumb it you ask me.

I fully understand what you are saying. I understand Amsoil makes a superior product. What I am referring to is that many on this site advocate the use of gear oil in the front diff of the Massey GC series of tractors instead of the Permatran that Massey recommends. What I am trying to determine is whether Amsoil 5w30 ATH would provide better protection than a 75w90 semi-synthetic gear oil in the front diff. Remember, we are talking about a differential not a hydrostatic transmission.

Thr front diff is filled with permatran because it is convenient. Only one lube needed for the diff & trans. Switching to an EP synthetic is the best thing you can do.

That is an explanation I was looking for. Convienience is something I could understand from a manufactures point of view. Thanks for the simple response.
