What is a good temperature for a gearbox with straight cut gears to run?

My new (used) Alamo was about 180 degrees today when I was mowing.

However, it was at least 90 degrees outside today.

They get pretty hot, but 180 degrees is just about perfect. You want to be over 140 degrees so the heat drives off any moisture.

Never thought about checking the temp until I saw this, anyway temp in the mid 80's and the gearbox on the Alamo was at 133 by the IR temp gun.

Yesterday I was following a 3/4 truck with a flatbed. It was 55F degrees and raining. His rear third member and about 6" of tube on each side of it was dry. Wonder what temp it was running?

I never have either until my reverser gave me trouble on my bulldozer. It would work fine when it was cold, but as it warmed up, it would start to slip. I dug into that problem and fixed it, but while I was there I put in a temperature and oil pressure gauge, as well as a hydraulic cooler.

It knocked my temperature down, but too far, and was creating condensation in the oil.
