Gear oil

Iam getting close to the first oil change on the front diff. of my Kioti DK40.
The manual says to use Sae80-90 gear oil,my question is this.
The present oil in the diff. does not have the putrid odor of the gear oils we all know.
I have even checked some of the synthetic gear oils and they all have that same putrid smell.
Does anybody know of a gear oil that doesn't have that distinctive odor?
I can't ask Kioti since they do not market lubricants and will suggest that I just use a quality oil.
I know this sounds like a stupid question but,Iam curious about what the factory uses and also the smell of gear oil(for some reason)almost makes me sick.........Mike

The smell comes from the oils that are formulated for hypoid gears. I think it's mostly sulphur. Hypoid gears are subject to sliding action, unlike spur gears which only use a point to point contact. If your front end has hypoid gears you need the oils with the smell. But since it came with non hypoid lube, I would assume it uses spur gears.

You can tell the difference if you can see or have a picture of the gears. Hypoid gears have a curved gear tooth, spur gears are straight. All automotive rear ends use hypoid gears because they are much quieter then spur gears. But spur gears are often used in tractors and other construction equipment because they are cheaper to make and stronger under load.

You can use a hypoid gear lube in a spur gear system without any problem, but not the opposite. That's why it's hard to find gear lubes that don't smell.

I don't know much about oils however some friends suggest using gear oil from a company called Schaeffers out of St. Louis. It does seem to make gear boxes run cooler and smoother. Not sure why, maybe the moly they use. Schaeffer's is a primarily industrial lubricant manufacturer.

However they have sales reps that will sell in smaller lots.

Bob is a sales site for Schaeffer's, Amsoil, Mobil and some others. They have some very interesting discussions on all aspects of lubrication. Noria I think is a professional association. Neither is a tractor site.

But why would you not follow the recomendation of the manufacturer?

Seems to me if they say use sae 80-90, that is what you should use. Not doing so could in the worst case void your warrenty.

I know you want to do what is best for your tractor...perhaps Kioti knows best...they should, they built it.

For what it is worth, that is what came to mind when reading your post.

THANKS GUYS,I appreciate all your responses.
I most likely will just use gear oil as they suggest.The thing that puzzles me is that the factory didn't use it.
It appears that they used the same oil that is used in the rear which is for both lube and hydraulics.That would make sense since both the front and rear diffs ard hyphoid gears why wouldn't the same lube work for both?am I missing something?

The DK 40 rear axle is lubricated with the fluid from the transmission. It
is acceptable to use the same hydraulic fluid that lubricates the
transmission and final drives, in the front axle. It is also correct to use
80-90w gear oil, as long as all the fluid is drained from the front axle and
the oils are not mixed. Be careful that you don't alternate the type of oil
used. If you decide to continue using the same fluid that is in the
transmission stick with that oil. Thank you for your questions and concerns.
