Generator advice for welder

Thanks for the link on that generator. It's a grand right now, but I'm in no rush and might just watch it for a while to see if it comes down again. At $650, that's a fantastic deal!!!!

Do all of you use it on propane? Does that burn cleaner, which means fewer issues over time? How long does a five gallon tank last? I really like the idea of propane for emergency use during winter storms.

Thank you,
Eddie

I use the generator I already had that runs off the PTO on my tractor. It's 12kW, so it has a 50A 220v outlet, as well as 30A and a bunch of 20A 110v. I throw the welder in the bucket of the tractor, so I can easily move everything around in the field wherever I need to work. I like stuff that runs off the PTO because then I don't have another engine I have to maintain, and pay for. Mine is similar to this one, but I bought it used on ebay so it was only about $600 if I remember.

Congrats to your brother. My wife teaches at UT Tyler and it's a great school. All of her students have jobs lined up before they graduate. It's very impressive!!!!

I've noticed the specs show the rating drops about 1,000 watts when using propane (10K/8K becomes 9K/7K).

My big problem is finding one that is CARB compliant for California. Lots more expensive and fewer choices. Gotta love Cali.

I'm at work now so I don't have the machine to look at but I bought a Champion 7500/8500 Watts (I think) and it runs my AC225 Lincoln just fine. It's supposed to be a clean power machine also and I do plan to run my PA160 inverter off of it too. I haven't gotten around to getting the proper plug yet; just too many various projects that suddenly crop up and need to be dealt with. You guys know how that can be!
It was on sale when I was looking and I believe I paid $500 or $600 for it. I've used it to power my entire house, well, pool, spa etc., etc. It really hums with everything on at one time and I don't plan to use it for pool, spa, etc., that was just a test of its abilities.
