Don't forget to do the calculations on your cooling of the room to make sure your fan is big enough, I think I used 34,000 btu per hp for mine..

I bought this Kubota diesel a couple weeks ago,

standard.jpg

It makes 40hp at 2,800rpms MAX, 35hp continuous... It also makes 25hp at 1,500rpms and the torque is FLAT!!!

I'm thinking about buying a generator head for it and making a whole house gen set out of it, I just need to figure out what brand 1800rpm generator head to buy, if I hook it direct, I'll have to run it at 1,800rpms, OR I could belt it a bit lower...

Sawyer Rob, I am working on something that. I was going to by the 10kw harbor freight gen head. You have to consider something though. You need 3600rpm at the gen head, so you need to play with pulley sizes a bit, and you can't direct drive.

If U want it to be quiet line the interior with old carpeting (glued or stapled) to the interior walls.
The sound absorption qualities will amaze you.
A fan for cooling will also do wonders.

Don't do this if you care/have sensitive electronic needs. this is a warning right out of the manual for your 10k, and my 7k. " THIS GENERATOR IS NOT INTENDED TO POWER SENSITIVE ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT WITHOUT THE ADDITION OF AN APPROPRIATE LINE CONDITIONER (SOLD SEPARATELY)."

the thd on these sucks its like <25% which is terrible (i asked HF myself). if you look at some of the links for the better generators, good generator heads are 4 pole (1800 rpm) and weigh 10 times what the HF gen head weighs. VR is also like 1% mine moves around quite a bit. THD is also under 2.5%

normally i don't read into this stuff much, but i have a bunch of cheap UPS for computer equipment. They HATE my HF genny, and constantly cycle between battery and line power.

If your going to spend the time to throw a good diesel in front of a gen head, spend the money to make sure your house is actually going to like the power it see's.!

You only need 3,600rpm's "IF" you buy a 2 pole generator head...

You need 1,800rpm if you buy a 4 pole generator head.

4 pole heads are a much better designed, longer lasting head and that would be my first choice...

You can direct drive a 4 pole head and run the engine at 1,800...

I've read some not so good things about HF gen heads, so I'm not even considering one of those...

BTW, after my LAST post, the power went out for 6+ hours...

Maybe the smaller generators would be OK without it, but I'd be a lot more comfortable with an insulated thimble where the exhaust pipe goes through wood. If noise is a concern, I'd use the brown rockwool insulation and stay away from any combustibles. Maybe drywall on top of the insulation if you have mice. On the bright side, it does look like you have a masonry wall between the generator enclosure and your living space in case anything would go awry.

I'm not sure why, but small volume outbuildings tend to build up condensation and cause things to rust. It's probably due to inadequate ventilation , and/or being shut off from heating sources that keep the space above the condensation temperature. Since water vapor rises in the presence of air, bottom to top passive or powered ventilation may be a key. As most of us have observed, just covering something with a plastic tarp doesn't preserve it very well. But using the tarp in an open ended ^ tent design works better.
