Georgia , good places to live?

Grits and fried eggs with the yolk runny is one of my favorite breakfasts. Salt, pepper and butter in the grits, take a spoonful of grits and mix it into the egg yolk. Rib stick'n eats.

I know... Way off topic but I'm with ya'. Best shrimp n grits I had for dinner ever was at Mr. B's in the French Quarter, New Orleans... and then to finish washing it down, wandered directly across the street to the famous Carousel bar in the Hotel Monteleone.

Now shrimp and grits sounds tempting as I do like shrimp. I will admit that the only sample of grits i ever tasted was not prepared by a southern cook that knew what they were doing so my sample size is way too small and obviously biased. Might even give them another try next year when we visit the daughter in her new digs to try to be a unbiased observer of the world around us.

I thought I didn't like grits until I had them proper in the South! I am sure your daughter will be pointing you to the good eats after she acclimates herself. As with all go to places in the world, talk to the locals. Don't follow the tourist suggestions. Good luck with her finding a nice place to call home.

Some people call Atlanta the metro area which has over 6 million residents and 8,376 square miles. Atlanta, the city, has 450,000 residents and 132 square miles. Crack and drugs can be found in almost any city and region. I live east where my neighbors are cows, coyotes and skunks. Just up the road 7 miles I can show you million dollar houses and $10,000 houses a few blocks away. In Atlanta proper I can show someone multi-million dollar homes and crack houses a few miles apart. Gentrified neighborhoods where car thievery, murder and mayhem occurs around people who just want to live and work.

It is sufficiently vague to say you want to help her find a place to live but not share the exact place of work or at least something vague like the intersection of Peachtree-Dunwoody and Hammond. If you give someone a clue about the work neighborhood then someone might offer better suggestions. I see all kinds of lovely neighborhoods. I know some people who live in those neighborhoods and when they were working they were making 5-10 times what I make. They pay more in property taxes than I pay in a mortgage payment.

Note that the observation I made in an earlier post was that taxes, inefficient city or county services and fees can varied widely depending on where you live and how efficient that city or county is. It was not a comparison of how inexpensive taxes may be compared with another region but a comparison between cities and counties in the Metro Atlanta area.

Well, I probably don't know good grits. I've only had them in the south once or twice at more or less nondescript places. Not a big fan of seafood, so the shrimp wouldn't be the direction I would go. I like grits with some hot sauce once in a while.

The only grits the local grocery carries is Quaker's quick grits.

It is sufficiently vague to say you want to help her find a place to live but not share the exact place of work or at least something vague like the intersection of Peachtree-Dunwoody and Hammond. If you give someone a clue about the work neighborhood then someone might offer better suggestions.

Lets say Emery University and surroundings to stay a little vague for security's sake.

If she ever gets in trouble... Ben Mattlock is in Atlanta, ops I think he's dead now. Hardest thing to find in Atlanta is a address on peach tree street.

Because of the high population density and high real estate demand of the combined Emory University, Emory Hospital, and CDC all together, prices will be very high in the immediate vicinity. But the Emory/CDC neighborhood and nearby Decatur are relatively low-crime areas compared to "metro Atlanta" in general. Still have pockets of higher crime around the MARTA lines and less advantaged neighborhoods. Commuting in from the suburbs or even farther out would probably quickly become VERY tedious - 2 hours or more each way would be a frequent occurrence. She might look for a rental house in some of the old residential neighborhoods out around the Northlake Mall area where there are two major feeder roads that could be used to access the Emory area (Briarcliff and LaVista).
