Getting Fat Lighter Stumps out?

George, what part of SC are you in.

My property is up in Fairfield county and I've got a fair amount of fat lighter on my place. I find a good bit of it lying around in the form of old trunks and branches. This is essentially the heart wood and really does not rot. There is not as much resin as in a good stump but you can still easily light this stuff with a match.

I'd guess that down in Bamberg there were more old growth pines than up here so I can imagine you have a lot more, probably long leaf pine too.

two-bit, yep, to me finding lighter wood is like gold. When you need it, there is nothing like it. I once had a big pile of soggy wet lumber scraps that I could not get to light with diesel, or paper or anything else. So I took a short hike and found a small, loose lighter stump. Shoved it up under all that soggy lumber, lit it with a lighter and 10 minutes later the whole thing was going like crazy.

When you have a good sized stump going the smoke is jet black....which is the reason you only use a small amount to light a fireplace or stove. That resin while coat a chimney in creosote.

The fat lighter replaces typical kindling. For starting a fire in the fireplace I'd put a sliver or two of fat lighter in, then a couple of dry split oak, then put a couple of wads of newspaper under that. The big difference is that you need less fat lighter than kindling and the fat lighter is much less fussy than kindling.

For an outdoor fire, I start with a chunk of fat lighter, pile whatever you have on top of that green, cured, wet, or whatever, give it a splash of diesel, instant bonfire.

A fat lighter knot will also make a decent torch in a pinch. BTDT.

It brings up memories. When I was kid just after WW2 I used to go to forest with my grandpa to dig out pine stumps by a pickaxe and shovel. It took few hours to get one rather small out of ground. I remember the smell of it burning when grandma was starting stove fire.

I remember seeing them go by the house by the tractor-trailer load when I lived in SE NC.

I am mainly just curious to if its a bad idea to try and use a tractor to get these stumps out. I am a brand new first time owner of a tractor. Ive got a Ford 5000 with FEL . If its a bad idea to use the tractor for this then i wont attempt it.
