Don't fall into the trap that your better at it, or that you know how and she doesn't, because you had to learn someplace too. If she wants it done, than there's no reason she can't learn how to do it herself.

Good luck,

Eddie, this would be true if she would only break her half of the tractor. She comes in saying "YOUR tractor won't work." If it has two moving parts I try to keep it away from her.

I am also. I can’t do anything for my IL without them trying to pay me. They all ways try to pay me more than it is worth. Even if I just volunteer to do something for them, I’ll find a check somewhere in a day or two. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Fortunately, I haven't built my HD trailer yet, so I can't be asked to provide tractoring help by relatives (or anyone else) except my neighbors on my street. I'm happy to help them, because they never take it for granted and are always ready to lend a hand if I need it.

With respect to doing favors generally, if what is been requested is unreasonable, I first try to figure out if the person is unaware that he or she is imposing. If it is innocent, I agree that the best approach is to explain gently but candidly why you can't do it.

I don't waste efforts at being polite on people who are just trying to take advantage. ...not worth the trouble. They just get "Ayuh...don't think I can do that." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well,my wife went to the inurance agent to see if my tractor was covered when i trailer it.It is not on my auto policy, adding insurance on the trailer only covers the trailer, and we are not sure if putting it on homeowners would cover it.So we are still waiting for an answer, but ill bet cha im gonna have to get some exspensive commercial insurance or something. My wife and i agreed that for hauling it to our other property5 or 6 times a year,we would risk it ,if the premium was ridicuous. We also agreed we would absolutely not do any work for any body else, even family, because we would be risking a 16000 dollar tractor for a favor.I hope on one hand to be covered, but on the other THERE MY BE A WAY OUT OF THIS GIVERS AND TAKERS JAM!!!

Esc, this came up on another thread recently, and I have had to check into the same issue. At least here in Mass, my homeowners did NOT cover for either damage to the equipment OR liability when operating off our property.

I got "Inland Marine" coverage for tractor and attachments and it wasn't too unreasonable ($250 for $38,000 of coverage with a $1000 deductible).

Liability was just ridiculous, however. Was going to be $1000 for $1mm. No way.... So when I do stuff on other people's property (I clear the driveways for 9 neighbors on my street) I just have them sign a release. Of course, I don't think I could do that if I was charging them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW, I learned the way out of being imposed upon (as in my earlier post) from my neighbors, when I had a place over in Lemoine, on Frenchman's Bay. That was THEIR way of declining to be manipulated and they weren't shy about using it. "Try it, you'll like it." /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You are in a different state than I am and rules/laws differ.

A personal tractor like you have is covered under a homeowners policy here BUT...

it is only covered for the perils listed in the policy and "crash" or "fell off trailer" aren't among those perils. "Fire, theft, lightning, wind & hail" etc. the tractor WOULD be covered for.

Liability for damage caused to someone else because the tractor fell off and hit them would be covered but under the auto liability of the vehicle that was towing it.

Question for you Phil,
I'm in California too. My homeowners covers where I live but don't know if it would cover the tractor being it's not kept on these premises? My homeowners does cover my golf cart, at home and on the course, but it's here at my home.
My tractor is 250 miles away on my rural property....no home there yet. What do you know about that?

You might want to check your policy carefully, Rob. Some homeowners policies may provide coverage for your property if its on other land that you also own, but I would assume that it doesn't unless the policy clearly says so.

The agent said putting the tractor on,would cover on my other property, which is also insured[camp and land],but shes still checking on falling off the trailer .My auto liability will cover damage it does to someone else, but not the tractor, i dont want to have payments on a 3000 lb piece of scrap metal,if ya know what i mean.
