I was using my backhoe this AM, and I did realize a big benefit of GST over HST or geardrive. With a GST, I can move the hoe without getting off the backhoe seat. I can raise the stabilizers, reach over and move the GST into first gear, move forward slowly, put back into neutral, lower stabilizers and continue digging. HST and gear drives require getting off the backhoe seat to move the tractor.

I suppose you could use a stick to push the hydro pedal to move the tractor with hoe. With the Kubota 2910, you may be able to reach the hydro lever next to the seat. Peter Hayden could probably comment on the latter.

Why not just move the tractor with the backhoe?

While sitting in the BH pos. it's pretty easy(at least with my long arms) to grab the reverse end of the pedal and lift.That's how I moved the L48 while digging on the move.

Yes, the backhoe can be used to push the tractor. It works but not always the easiest. Engaging the GST is simple and quick.

Radman - Unless you're talking about a tractor with a swivel seat that allows you to turn it around and be at the tractor controls, I'd avoid that maneuver. To engage the GST while you're facing backwards could be extremely dangerous. You could easily be thrown from the tractor, for example, if the tractor was inadvertently left in a higher gear. Pushing the tractor with the backhoe isn't the safest way in the world, but it's a lot safer than engaging the GST, I think. Also, normally, when you're using the backhoe, the loader bucket should be on the ground and locked to increase the stability of the machine. Be careful out there - a backhoe can be a lot more dangerous than it appears.
