So I guess when these bulbs are used up they're stored in a vault somewhere where they can't be broken?

Good question. One job I had was building a mobile unit to recover mercury from commercial HID lamps using a carbon bed (think charcoal.). The guy I worked for also built retorts to recover the mercury from the carbon. I don't know where the recovered mercury went.

Would you think that all the burnt out FL's in the world that have been used in offices and homes since 1938 have all been stored in vaults?

Pretty silly isn't it? We've been using these lamps for over 70 years and all of a sudden the mercury is a big problem. Mean while just about every office on the planet uses them.

Take a look at the computer you're typing on. Is it an EPEAT Gold? If not than a lot of it isn't recyclable like a CFL lamp is.
Do you remember all the computer displays before LCD's? They all had mercury in them. Did that stop you from owning one? So let's try and keep things in perspective.

All of a sudden every conservative in the US is highly troubled by mercury in lamps. The massive amounts of mercury from unscrubbed coal stacks spewed into the environment everyday doesn't seem to bother them though!

What's wrong with this picture?

Absent catastrophic pressure that will finally occur 'naturally', it will take regulatory control.
larry

So Larry, you think the government should tell you how many children you are allowed to have?

Cotton, Did someone mention Cotton?

Yes Beef, was that also a topic or item of disention. In the last few days I have had the misfortune go driving by a few large feedlots.

Bottle the essence and release in crowded areas at meal time. Consumption of all food will rapidly decline!

Could solve a lot problems, yes!

No again. You have to read the post as a composite. If people cant be rational tho, perhaps regulation can be. Maybe people should start being rational in regard to their litters to prevent imposition of controls. Trouble is, when you mix in religion and other superfluous stuf, rationality fades to black.

How do we judge "rational"? Do we use your parameters? Octomom's parameters? Or someone living in another country with a relativistic morality that doesn't fit your moral paradigm? How about a religious model of rationality? You dismiss religion but there's a large contingency of people who will disagree with you.

There are problems with the two philosophies. If we only use science as barometer regulating man's action we remove conscience (Gordon Gecko's "greed is good").
The Inquisition reflected a time in history when religion dominated, just as destructive. Today we're seeing the decline of religion as a criteria for introspection and action with equally damaging results.

Whitehead made some interesting observations on this:

"When we consider what religion is for mankind, and what science is, it is no exaggeration to say that the future course of history depends upon the decision of this generation as to the relations between them."

Alfred North Whitehead

If people cant be rational tho, perhaps regulation can be.

So one, who regulates? And two, we're back to my original question, "are you prescribing that the government tell you how many children you are allowed to have?"

No. A gallon of gas is energy - so KW-Hrs. The figure for gasoline is 11. 4 KWhrs/kilogram. Around 30KWhr/gal.
larry

Good catch. Originally, I was referring to his "time" terms becoming squared. I gave up before the gas energy density issue. Units are so important that once I find them wrong, I wonder on off since if someone says there are "twelve" I always have to know "twelve what?"
