MossRoad The reason you did not get ice this tear had more to do with the location of the jet stream than anything else. I have yet to see how the earth's temperature affects the jet stream location. As far as man's contribution to change in climate, I would really like to see non-man contributions quantified then man's contribution will be what's left. Most of the evidence that has been provided similar to patrick_g post making claims without providing enough information to back those claims.
The jet stream was avoiding Detroit.

Greenland ice sheet may melt completely with 1.6 degrees of global warming

Posted: 11 Mar 2012 09:32 PM PDT

The Greenland ice sheet is likely to be more vulnerable to global warming than previously thought. The temperature threshold for melting the ice sheet completely is in the range of 0.8 to 3.2 degrees Celsius of global warming, with a best estimate of 1.6 degrees above pre-industrial levels, shows a new study.

Hey, it is easy to say this is insufficiently documented/proven. It is trivial to say so and so didn't supply enough proof. Anyone can say that about anything. The remarks are simplistic and of no value to the discussion. Disagreeing is fine and no one should mind informed dissent but don't just say nay, offer evidence to the contrary, if you have any.

Oh by the way the source is Science Daily which releases condensed "teasers" which if stimulated to LEARN more you go to their site and read the unabridged version and or the actual journal pub when it comes out.

Global warming skepticism climbs during tough economic times

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 09:24 AM PDT

The American public's growing skepticism in recent years about the existence of human-made global warming is rooted in apprehension about the troubled economy, a new study suggests.

I'd prefer to peruse The National Enquirer. Lots more pictures!

One of the problems AND solutions which seems to often be ignored is the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS).

WAIS collapse will raise sea level up to 21 feet. Talk about "surf's up".

The problem is of course that a lot of the world population centers will be flooded. The solution is that a lot of the world population will die.

Like the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" the sheet could crack and collapse rather suddenly, in geologic terms.

There is no global warming. I heard it on the radio. Daily. If not at least every three hours. Over and over again. Somebody (corporations are people) must be very afraid of the science to insist talk radio hosts repeat the mantra that there is no global warming.

There are actually two issues. Is there a warming of the global climate? And, if there is, is it caused by humans? Certainly some scientific evidence and some apocryphal evidence in specific areas indicates a warming is occurring. On the apocryphal side, I have old newspapers indicating folks could ride from town to town in a horse-drawn sleigh in the 1880s here in the Shenandoah Valley for essentially all winter. Now we have a few feet of snow a winter and it melts quickly. And we had no snow at all this winter.

There are a number of climate models I have seen showing a number of climatical cycles over decades and centuries that show us getting warmer globally.

The kicker is whether anything humans do or have done is affecting that climate. Given the size of the earth and its atmosphere, it just doesn't seem that likely. I have not seen any evidence I find convincing yet, but I continue to look.

Apocryphal in it's own right.:)

What we need is a list of all the people, and companies, that are sure there is no such thing as global warming. Get them all to sign up, and then if say, 50 years from now there property goes under water, they especially will not want anyone to give them compensation for the land loss. We all heard about how the Republicans are against bailouts except for the crying spell from Boehner.
If you go to Nasa's site it shows some interesting facts, I live at the 2,000 ft level so unless their is a drought and fire, I will be OK

Noah: What is this?

The Lord God: It's an Ark.

Noah: Aha.

You wanna get it outta my driveway? I gotta get to work.

Listen, what's this thing for, anyway?

The Lord God: I can't tell you.

Noah: Well, I mean, can't you give me a little hint?

The Lord God: You wanna a hint?

Noah: Yes, please.

The Lord God: How long can you tread water?

There is more to consider besides is there climate change and is it at least partly caused by man. Ask if climate change is good or bad and how much so. Ask if we can do anything about it in either case. What and how?

So if enough ice melts we loose New Orleans, huh? Well every dark cloud does have a silver lining.

The 1000 ft contour meanders through my gently rolling property. Give me a shout when the water is passing 800ft.

It may be that the Gulf Stream will stop flowing because of global warming and then we'll have another ice age.

New study lowers estimate of ancient sea-level rise

Posted: 14 Mar 2012 11:28 AM PDT

The seas are creeping higher as the planet warms. But how high will they go? In Bermuda and the Bahamas, researchers have gone looking for answers; By pinpointing where shorelines stood during a warm period 400,000 years ago, they hope to narrow the range of projections. After correcting for apparent sinking of the islands, the authors of a new study estimate the seas rose 20 to 43 feet higher than today -- far less than previous estimates, but still drastic.

Oh great! The beach will be under water, just not as much as previously thought. A lot of folks who wanted but couldn't get waterfront property will get their wishes granted retroactively.

Millions of Americans at risk of flooding as sea levels rise

Posted: 14 Mar 2012 08:17 AM PDT

Nearly four million Americans, occupying a combined area larger than the state of Maryland, find themselves at risk of severe flooding as sea levels rise in the coming century, new research suggests. Researchers say that with so many communities concentrated on US coasts, the odds for major storm damage get bigger every year.

Note balance, leverage, catalysis, avalanche effects, etc. It is certainly possible that humanity in its semi random flailing will operate a lever.

Isn't it possible that we could screw up and do something right? After all, they say that all that particulate we put up in the air is slowing the warming way down.

Yes it is! ...and a bunch of monkeys pounding at random can theoretically type out the entire collected works of Shakespeare but it is highly unlikely!

Entropy is a universal inescapable fact. Avoiding it successfully for a significant period of time due to lucky random processes is less likely than being invited out for drinks by the tooth fairy, Santa and his elves, and 100 Hollywood starlets all in one night.

It's just about happened, google Gulf stream shutdown. But that only mainly affects Europe.

And southern New England, Maine, NS,PEI,Canada north to Greenland!
The gulfstream affects these places to a degree before it heads across the Atlantic- though less than Europe.

Oh ye of little faith.

Oh yeah, I'm the guy who started the thread: It's All Downhill From Here.

Actually, I believe that entropy might be the case in physical systems, when viewed apart from the whole. I mean, once the ethers spin up and form into strings, and these, on to quarks and such, there will be limits within each semi-independent system of motion, but the forces behind universal motions are not necessarily subject to entropy. In fact, I'd bet against it. As for the system known as, "planet earth," we in a heap of doo doo.
