GM I6 Diesel Impressions

I think I might just test drive one, one of these days. Curious if you can get a nice plain (no bling) one.

I have a low mileage 08 Duramax, never had a lick of mechanical trouble, but always like to know what my next vehicle will be, just in case something happens.

Are the little foreign Dodge Diesels still Grenading?

It seems like a few people are still having issues with the newer ones from VM (Fiat), mine is a 2015 with 89,000 miles on it now with minimal issues.

I liked owning Dodges. FIAT, not so much! lol

If Ford and GM can shoehorn a big V8 diesel into their HD pickups, and RAM can run a diesel twice the displacement of the GM I6 in their HD's, all able to tow better than 17,000 pounds without overheating, then what is the issue with this little I6 and heat? What am I missing?

What are you missing? Three little letters... M P G :)
That drives all decisions, and according to the comment earlier about heat issues it was based on efficiency. MPGs are important in 'half tons' since they count towards EPA goals. HD's aren't included in these goals so they tune for power over efficiency.

Correct--CAFE rules apply to light duty trucks and count for/against the fleet, not HD's.

Exactly! The new "revised" standards require all vehicles to average 40.4 mpg by 2026...down from the 54.5 mpg mandated by Obama a few years ago. So anything the manufacturers can do to squeeze a tiny bit more mpg out of a vehicle they are going to do it...even if it means not letting an engine breathe or shutting the engine off automatically in a Jeep Wrangler when you come to a stop on a difficult trail.

What might the fuel economy be of one of those midsize Diesel Toyota Pickups you always see the Taliban driving?

I would buy a new one of those in a heartbeat. Crank up windows, manual locks and all, if it had a pre-emmissions/computer engine.

Amen to that! A simple, reliable rig like that would last me the rest of my life...probably why I can't buy one like that here.

The light duty Ram 1500 and Ford F150 with the V6 3.0 liter diesels and the GM with the inline 6 diesel,
are all looking for the same market share the half ton pickups with towing capabilities that are unimaginable compared to just 10 years ago,
and while getting very good mileage under emission standards that to my mind are extremely unrealistic and are without a doubt not conductive to
hard work and long life.
I enjoy my little V6 diesel but I have to wonder what it could accomplish with a more reasonable emission standard to meet.
I get a consistent 22 mpg winter and 24-26 mpg summer with my overall driving rural roads and hills at times some idling for heat or AC.
I have gotten 26-28 mpg on trips and did see 29 mpg one day sight seeing at 30 to 45 mph for 6 hours.
With more reasonable emissions I do believe it would accomplish 30 mpg overall.
As a comparison my Dakota was a 16 mpg overall truck, my older Ford F150's did 14-16 mpg when not being worked.
My 3/4 tons have been 10-12 mpg normal and 4-8 working hard.

I would like to see a some what simple truck but I do want AC, power windows and locks.

I figure my 94 Dakota with a 6, a 2000 Dakota with the 318 non hemi and my 6.6 Duramax all got similar mileage.

AC and locks is nice. Power windows no big deal. But I really don't need a HUGE computer monitor, lots of chrome plated plastic and wheels that look like they came off a circus wagon.

Too bad the heating systems on new trucks seem so lousy at keeping feet warm. My GMC has some utterly stupid dual climate non sense, (as bought off the lot) but you drive around with cold feet!

NOT on my Silverado, it will cook you out, feet and all!

As for fuel millage, It's waaaaay better than I ever thought it would be for having a 355 hp V8!

Is it variable displacement? Why the V8 symbol?

Back to the heating. You can make the fan load and noisy but I am at a loss as to where all that air is going. Certainly not to the floor.

/ GM I6 Diesel Impressions #56
AND, you might forget that?

/ GM I6 Diesel Impressions #57
You might, I won't... lol lol

IF GM had sent it to Canada, with the exchange rate, it would probably say 4... lol

That's pretty good for an average with a V8. As I mentioned earlier, the best I could do with a new Silverado with a 5.3 was an 18.6 MPG average over a 2000 mile test drive with commuting only. No towing and pretty much nothing heavier than groceries. My driving starts out with a lot of starts and stops and hills and corners. I always wonder what my numbers wold be if I lived somewhere flatter. What did surprise me most was that I was able to get all of the 29 MPG advertised, and even a bit more on some tanks. My diesel Colorado on its best tanks was about 2 MPG lower than the 29 MPG advertised, and now I have more space, size and power too.

I was sure it was a variable displacement thing. Is that dead?
