I think I might just test drive one, one of these days. Curious if you can get a nice plain (no bling) one.

I have a low mileage 08 Duramax, never had a lick of mechanical trouble, but always like to know what my next vehicle will be, just in case something happens.

It seems like a few people are still having issues with the newer ones from VM (Fiat), mine is a 2015 with 89,000 miles on it now with minimal issues.

If Ford and GM can shoehorn a big V8 diesel into their HD pickups, and RAM can run a diesel twice the displacement of the GM I6 in their HD's, all able to tow better than 17,000 pounds without overheating, then what is the issue with this little I6 and heat? What am I missing?

What are you missing? Three little letters... M P G :)
That drives all decisions, and according to the comment earlier about heat issues it was based on efficiency. MPGs are important in 'half tons' since they count towards EPA goals. HD's aren't included in these goals so they tune for power over efficiency.

Correct--CAFE rules apply to light duty trucks and count for/against the fleet, not HD's.

Exactly! The new "revised" standards require all vehicles to average 40.4 mpg by 2026...down from the 54.5 mpg mandated by Obama a few years ago. So anything the manufacturers can do to squeeze a tiny bit more mpg out of a vehicle they are going to do it...even if it means not letting an engine breathe or shutting the engine off automatically in a Jeep Wrangler when you come to a stop on a difficult trail.

What might the fuel economy be of one of those midsize Diesel Toyota Pickups you always see the Taliban driving?

I would buy a new one of those in a heartbeat. Crank up windows, manual locks and all, if it had a pre-emmissions/computer engine.

Amen to that! A simple, reliable rig like that would last me the rest of my life...probably why I can't buy one like that here.
