 You do know that GM and Fiat each have a 50% stake in VM, right?
ahh yes, Fiat owns Chrysler now, not GM... Nevermind, fact remains that Isuzu has a longer reputation of building quality engines than VM ever had...

The VM diesel is used by GM, Opal, Ford, Chrysler ,Daewoo and those London England taxi cabs.can't be all bad at least the engines not choked and over priced due to the EPA .
I personally dont care what engine they put in, as they wont sell them here in Europe anyways.
Can you name the models of GM, Opel, Chrysler, Daewoo and London Taxis that use the VM engine ? Yes the London Taxi uses it and the Ram 1500 will get one, and GM/Daewoo has licensed 1.5 and 2 liter engines of them. But all others only use this engine when they rebadge a vehicle from another manufacturer.
Simply put, except for the London Taxi and the Ram 1500, VM engines are put into vehicles that compete on price, not on quality.

I thought all vehicles compete on price in their bracket?
Generally the Germans compete on the solid quality feel, where the Koreans use cheap plastics, switches and knobs feel cheaper, and they are actually cheaper. The French (Renault and Citroen) compete on luxury for a low price, lots of electronic gimmicks that breakdown, hence their low resale value. Peugeot is located both geographically as well as strategically inbetween the other French and the Germans. Italian cars unique selling point is design, they are still rust prone and changeing a timing belt on Alfa Romeos may take 2 days because the engine has to be taken out: Within the design of the artists, the engineers couldnt provide a way to keep service and repair costs under control. Friends drive Alfas but they never make it home on a holiday, its the 3rd consecutive year they have to be trucked home because an Alfa quits. just like Renault, notoriously unreliable. Fiat builds quite good cars in their main market (small vehicles, driven by girls and grannies) Japs sell vehicles for a reasonable price, given the very good quality, but Jap parts are very expensive, they take the profit on parts, not on initial sales. Luckily Jap cars dont need parts often.

Then look, VM engines are used in Alfas and Daewoos... And now in GM and Dodge, which are considered to be on the same dependability level by most Europeans...

To be honest most North Americans have no clue about Europe except what they see on TV with WWII movies, James Bond, exotic street legal race cars and media clips of old buildings and fountains. Sorry.
Not to brag but Canadians can generally find Europe on the globe, the general location of the countries and a few high lights of each.
Not to slam Americans but their public education system and culture dwell on their own county, state and Country. The rest of the world is of minor interest or effect on the mighty #1 USA. Nothing wrong with cheer leading your own country first but you should at least know some world wide geography and history.

That's painting with a pretty broad brush.

Did you expect something different?

If you want various shades of grey then sure there could be books written on the topic. If you want one paragraph on a forum, the broad brush does fit rather well.

Thats the general impression we have from americans indeed, however the audience of this forum seems to have, for american standards, above average knowledge of whats going on in the rest of the world. :)

When you ask an American what makes America exceptional, he will mention the moon landing. Actually the rocket which put Americans on the moon was designed by a team of German engineers captured right after WW2, because the American team failed and they were afraid to loose against the Russians.... Its fine to be proud of your heritage, but you should get informed about what heritage you can actually take credit for... ;)

Anyways, i didnt get much civil war in history classes, i just educate myself by documentaries on youtube, because i am interested in the American politics with its two party system, and cultural problems. I am quite amazed about the Trevon Martin/Zimmerman case, the whole country seems to be both judge and juror in that case... ? P.s. My grandfather doesnt live anymore, but if he lived to see them Black Panthers with their stupid uniforms that resemble and remember him of the German SS, he would still throw a fit.
