The worst car I have ever owned in my life was a honda cvcc. Nothing else come close. I know a lot of people who had them and had great luck.
Funny you mention. One of my relatives had a loaded Accord from the mid-80's. Auto transmission went out at 60K. $3,500 to fix out of pocket. It was replaced with a Mitsubishi Galant "Sigma". Transmission blew out in that one too! It also had a stalling problem no one could seem to fix.
In todays economy people that want to buy american have a tough decision. Do you buy the american corp car built in mexico or the Japanese car built in alabama.
I'd still buy the American name car assembled in Mexico. You're probably still getting a vehicle with American content. In fact, some Mexican assembled cars have more domestic content than Japanese cars assembled in the US. Remember, this is only where they are assembled, the parts could come from anywhere. By buying the American nameplate assembled in Mexico, you are also still supporting the domestic economy and profits go to the domestic company.
If you don't like the fact that domestics are built offshore in some cases, blame US Gov't policies, not the Big 3. But that's a political discussion that's not allowed.
