On several other boards, the suposition is that Volvo has given, lent or leased at very favorable rates all the Hoffman's equipment.

I don't know if I buy that, because the people who buy and lease heavy equipment don't really seem like they would be influenced by a TV show, unlike people who may buy a Bosch router because Tommy Silva uses one

Maybe Tom needs to get into heavier equipment. I love watching that guy -- old school New Englander carpenters are real characters.

I havent leased any heavy equipment in a long time and I know things have changed. Used to be that you could go to a equipment dealer and lease to buy for a small downpayment and a contract for monthly terms until you had paid enough to make the real downpayment on the purchase price. For $3 or $4k, you could walkout of the dealer with a brand new piece of equipment. At the end of your lease term, you either applied the lease payments to the purchase price of the machine and financed the remaining portion, or you turned the machine back over to the dealer with nothing negative against your credit report. I think with the economy downturn and more equipment being returned than purchased, leasing has gotten a lot more difficult. As to whether Volvo, or any other manufacturer, would provide equipment based on advertiseing, I dont know. I was watching moonshiners the other nite and OldSmokey moonshine was advertiseing and sponsoring that show. I guess without knowing for certain, its hard to guess what a company will do to advertise their product. I think I would be hard pressed to pay to have my product represented by such a large group of screwups as those folks on Goldrush. Of course, someone is supposed to hit the motherload this year and that might look pretty favorable to the manufacture whoes equipment they are using.

For the life of me, I cant figure out how using a gps to locate there claim can put them a mile off from where they are supposed to be.

He was trying to correlate between the GPS location and the map. Not easy if they don't use the same map datum such as latitude/longitude or UTM. I would think since the map is probably a legal document of mining claims it most likely used Range and Township or similar versus Lat/Long. What he should have done is what the other guy did, get close, find a corner post and confirm your map position. From there it would be easy to shoot an azimuth with the GPS's compass and navigate to the other corners.

Most likely he was just guessing based on the 'pictures' (map display) and there appear to be quite a few 'square ponds' in that area from previously worked claims.

I dont really know how GPS are supposed to work, so you may be right. Still, if all claims are suppoed to be marked with corner stakes, I think I would have wanted to see the stakes for my claim before spending a bunch of money clearing the land.

After saying that, I can remember a realitor hireing me to clear a home site to build a new house on. We drove to the site, he showed me the corners and I did the work. About a wk later the real owners of the property I had just cleared wanted to know what the heck we where doing cutting timber on her property. Seems the realitor got confused as to which lot he actually owned and had me clear the wrong property. I think things got pretty nasty between the real owners and the realitor.

GPS has to be told what to use. There only as smart as the operator. Also they were only like 20 acre claims, i dont know why then did not walk the few hundred yards to a corner to confirm, like you said?

Lastnite, Dave admitted that he inter the wrong type of info, said something about being three different types of data that can be used. Seems they will be mining the land they have already stripped anyways since the same claim owner owned both claims.

I sorta wanna pull for the underdog, that being Parker at the Big Nugget Mine. However he may not really be the underdog; im thinking that Todd's crew might be the biggest clusterf*%k of talentented operators. Parker seems to be running things w/o all the "sponsors" of the other guys.

I think Parker's grandpa is letting him spend his inheritance w/o saying anything to him.

I think Parker is well aware of what he is spending ,I also hope he is the one to make the most of all this !Most talented equipment driver "as a kid " that I have ever seen !

If you caught the "Black Friday" behind the scenes show, Parker borrowed 150g from grandpop and was rebuilding the bridge to bolster his cashflow. He also grew up around heavy equipment which shows with how comfortable he is around it.

Rather than focus on the blunders, I like to view the show with envy. How many among us would not like to set off for the wild to play with big toys hoping to strike it rich?
