The thing worked extremely well. The tires, if memory serves, were basically the sort of thing you'd see on a wheel barrow - solid and 8 or 10" diameter, maybe 1 1/2" wide threads. The spacing, as I said, was a tiny bit closer than a golf ball diameter.
It was neat to watch - the balls would sort of pool in from of the wheels until they got stuck between and then end up in the basket.
I bet you could do a 'proof of concept' with three wheels and an an axel.
