Good Help (So Hard to Find)

I take technical questions on forklifts for the forklift dealership I work for. Young, old, doesn't matter. Just took a call today from a 45 year old guy that has been a mechanic for years. He couldn't find a working back-up alarm on a forklift.
Me.....Ummm, follow the beeping.
Him....I can't find it.
Me.....Follow the beeping
Him....I am

He has been looking for the alarm for over 2 hours and as far as I know may still be looking for it.
Idiocy doesn't discriminate based on age.

It's probably hard to find the alarm, chasing the forklift around the warehouse.:laughing:

Hired an older man after that and had to use my MF285 till the case was fixed. Second day on the job he called and said " your pto lever just fell off". After looking at it found out he was trying to force it and broke the internal lever and the housing.

In all fairness, did you show him how to operate your equipment properly before turning him loose?

Its absolutly frustrating ... I seem to believe some folks have lost the spirit of self satisfaction in doing a job and doing it right ...

Hire them in masses and throw them out on there a**es ...

I find today that the biggest concern is what day is pay day!! I love it when I try to hire a new guy and his main concern is what will he being doing?

WORK ...man thats what!

I get the feeling you have a high turn over rate. You can bet your ***** I'd want to know what I'd be doing. Remember, your business may be your life, but it's just a job to everyone else. They aren't doing it for fun, they're there to GET PAID.

Well, there are different kinds of "work",,thats one of the first questions I ask when I talk to someone about a job,,,what will I be doing, what is the job details,,,used to would say yes,if money and location was right,,but have been on several wild goose chases,,,you might get to a job and they might look up 6 stories and point to the end of a girder and say, there it is,[not an iron worker],,or might say,,its in that tank right there, where do I put my stuff,,they might say,we don't know, etc,,,,learned to ask questions before packing my bag,,,and it not only helps me weed out things I don't want to do,,it saves the people needing someone to do that job,to have to find someone else once they thought they already had found someone.

So,if I was hiring someone, would want to be clear about job,and would be a little worried if the person didn't ask,,don't need to waste time/money/breath

And you can bet you I pay and I pay good for a good job done. When I was younger and seeking a job I was happy to get hired... and I worked!! It didn't matter if I was cleaning out the hog barn, fixing fence or what ever the task. Never do I recall asking "What will I be doing" I mean this is farm and ranch WORK not Farm and Ranch PLAY...

I "paid" my 15 years old son to do some work for me this summer. I'm trying to get a good work ethic going for him, but at times its tough. Sometimes he does a good job, other times not so good. I was worried he would try to run up the hours he was working just to get more money, but he is fair about the hours he works. The problem is him doing a complete job. For example, he waxed my truck, did an O.K. job, not great, but he didn't do the roof. He said he couldn't reach it:shocked: I told him you open the doors and stand on the door sills, and if you didn't know how to do it, you ask!
