I got out and planted a few rows of longleaf seedling down by the graveyard. It was very nice out, hitting 75F before I finished. But my winter beard didn't make it through the day. When the sweat starts to drip, I shave.

no joy on my fruit tree holes. Worse today, water is almost up to the top of the holes.
Sure would like to ship some of this to California...
hmmm, a small gas powered trash pump could suck the water out for long enough to get the trees planted and tamped in
with solid earth, before the water reinfiltrated. Maybe it's not good to fool Mother Nature...but I need to get them planted.
the water level has to go down...
I have some dc pumps I could jury rig but they'd clog in a heartbeat. Or maybe I just go really simple and get a slightly smaller bucket and let my helper bucket the water out. Faster, faster! ;)

There is a reason they call this Lowlands...sure doesn't take much for the water to get high.

How about planting some Bald Cypress? They will suck a creek dry.

I now have ice dams that are leaking into the house. I tossed some salt pucks up on the roof. Its supposed to get up to 40 with rain tomorrow. Any other ideas?
Drew that sounds like a winner to me right now. This winter has been a rough on on us.

Can you throw a long heat tape over the ice dam and melt it down? At least melt some channels in it.

If you have water coming in, the lesser of evils is to break up the ice sheets using ice melt liberally to weaken the ice. Beat on the ice with something blunt like a hammer face to break/crack it up. You will lose some shingle grit (and shingle life) but that is better than ruined and/or collapsed drywall and wet insulation in a wall or ceiling.

Wear safety glasses if you pound on the ice.

2015-03-03,

3 degrees right now...looks like a high of 30 today and snow this afternoon into tonight. 3-5 inches predicted along with some ice tonight.

I have to go to Connecticut today for a meeting...something we could have done on a webinar, but, as a good soldier, I do what I'm told. Real bummer is I'll miss the Bethel Town Meeting.

Good morning.

As txdon declined to supply animal pics yesterday (and for that we were all grateful), I'll put up a couple more lamb pictures instead.
These are the youngest, still sheltering inside.

Others out in the field are finding shelter from the biting wind wherever they can.

I tried to move some ewes and their lambs over to another field this morning where the water isn't frozen. The ewes are easy enough to bribe with a bucket of corn pellets, however the lambs don't really want to move away and a dozen or more kept doubling back to where they spent the night.

Dog is not much help. He's happy to let the lambs be, just giving them a sniff and occasional wag of his tail.
So I've admitted defeat for the moment. Have to try again later and ask the Mrs to help
