Larro....Good luck tonight...Get ready for your supper to be Popsicles and Jelly beans...LOL

They always have Hungry Howie's cheese pizzas, plain potato chips and Sam's Choice colas. Most years I will have a slice of pizza, just to be sociable. But since today is my low calorie day, I was going to take a Swai fillet anyway.

I thought of pizza after I posted that...LOL I don't see Swai available around here...I have looked for it since you have mentioned it...Is it like Tillapia ?

63F only .10 inches rain yesterday and after I completed my work.

Looks like it might be a good day to start getting caught up with mowing, but have to clean the pool first.

Be warm and careful out there.

Have a great day.

Brin, I like the Swai better than Tillapia. It is sweeter and flakier. I had never heard of it until the Harveys grocery store where I shop at started to carry it. It was cheaper than the Tillapia so I tried it. Since then I have been buying it whenever it's on sale.

When I Googled it, I found out it is an Asian catfish. Most of what is shipped to America is pond raised in Vietnam. They can get really big in the wild, but the fillets are 10-12".

Interesting read on the rain gauges, especially about accuracy. But I have to wonder... What about the manual part? My Davis gauge records from midnight to midnight. I assume it is pretty good at telling time and does so without my presence. Are the manual folks really that good about taking the measurement at exactly the same time without fail? What if it is really coming down at the time, how do you account for what is missed during the measurement phase? I know I sure wouldn't be measuring during a down pour. Just curious.

Been busy the last couple of days. We were woken up at 4:30 am yesterday, our renter said she heard water running in our shop. Went there and about 1/4 of the shop was raining water out of the light cans. A pipe froze and broke in the drywall ceiling. Spent the rest of the day cleaning up and dealing with the insurance folks, with time out for Joan's treatment. The insurance company had me call a company that does restorations - never dealt with this before, I am waiting to hear from the adjuster. The whole thing is a pia. That -15F really bit me in the butt. And the wallet, my deductible is 1K. :( Now need to do some more plumbing work and so forth. The restoration crew is supposed to show up tommorrow. The joys of living in Michigan....

interesting, I tried some for the first time last week. I usually just walk on by the fish counter at the Acme, but when this Tilapia looking whitefish was advertised by 5.99 a pound, I tried it. Sort of like a pumped up Tilapia, but what I bought unfortunately didn't seem that fresh. So I dumped a bunch of mild salsa on it and it was fine. Now I wonder what the heavy metal content is...it's not the water they swim in I worry about, though it's a catfish so I assume it will eat anything on the bottom , but it's the cheap Chinese fish food of unknown purity they are likely feeding the fish in pens. Before I get intimate with a fish I'd like to know where's she been... :D

yeah, i should have fried it, given it more flavor, pan cooking in a little butter, even with herbs, was a little boring.
Randy, you are really pushing it though when you try to peddle that okra. That slimey gook does nothing for me, and I've tried okra soup and
okra fritters. It was still slimey...sorry. If an eel became a vegetable, it would become an okra plant.
I think we've covered that adequately...:D

and you living on the Eastern shore sure know about Chesapeake eels.

Actually, we are pretty fortunate. My wife's cancer was detected very early, so it is relatively easy to treat, and she is healthy. We have good insurance and get checkups every year. She gets mammograms every year. And the shop is insured, so we are only going to out the deductible, but since it happened in the dead of winter, this is the slowest part of the year for her. All this is a opportunity to reset a bunch of stuff in our life, so at the end of the day, it's all good!! :)

Correctly fried small okra cut into 1/4" or so pieces, zero slime, I can't eat the slimy junk either. In soup it's like slippery yuck!

I was raised in northeastern NC, so eels are not new to me, but I haven't and don't plan to eat one.

I used to think the only way to eat okra was fried. I tried it grilled, and it s my very favorite way now. Can only do that with fresh, but tehre is zero slime.

And if you are going to boil it, or put it in soup, make sure you have enough acid, and there will be no slime. Add vinegar to it when boiling, and plenty of tomatoes in the soup. Ever notice okra and tomatoes are not slimy? It is the acid in the tomatoes that cuts the slime.

Now, I have done my helpful deed for the day! :D Cooking class is dismissed!

Ok, thanks FG, but it seems you have to work pretty hard at making it edible.
And with so many other good things to eat...
but you can't have a gumbo without it right?

vegetarian eel soup, yum

hey, who is going to clean up all these pots you messed up???

/ Good morning!!!! #18,096
I LOVE okra! Wouldn't want to live without it. I grill it fresh in the summer, and make okra and tomatoes with fresh tomatoes from the garden. I feeze it, cut, ready for soups, and gumbo, and whole to boil and add to the black-eyed peas on New Year's. It is loaded with nutrients, and fiber. Good, and good for you!

/ Good morning!!!! #18,097
What's wrong with slimy okra? Just like raw oysters, once you get it past your lips, you've got it licked. It even has a point on the end to help it go down easy.:D
