I'm worried about my sister's son/family that lives in Redding.

So far the prevailing winds have been from the northwest, and it's carrying the fire to the south of Redding, Drew. Looks like they'll stay that way for the next ten days or so, with a few hours of southeasterly winds overnight. There is a segment of fire north of the Sacramento River that has been creeping to the east, but you can bet the firefighters have been focusing on it. Not sure where your people are, but I've got friends on the east side of town, and they're watching the reports closely. After Santa Barbara and Santa Rosa, they should be very nervous. The same kind of house to house jumping that happened in those to communities happened in Keswick two nights ago.

If it ever got into Redding proper, the whole place would go up. The winds have been erratic in the fire itself; last night a Redding TV station, which had to evacuate their studios, showed video of a fire tornado that dwarfed the homes in the foreground. I couldn't find that video online, but I did find this one, which tells me that it happened more than once. Truly, He11 on earth.

As far as my way out, there's only one small paved road to the property. I have two ways I can get down to the lake by foot, and I'm a good swimmer.:laughing: Not too worried it would come to that, as the town of Paradise is just up the canyon. CalFire doesn't give two hoots about my place, but they know anything big enough to take my house is up wind and down canyon from the town, and with all the towering pine trees into which the homes are nestled, they'd never get it stopped until the town was one big cinder. They had a big response two years ago on the Saddle Fire that came very, very close to here, and three times already this year, the water bombers have been flying within a mile of here putting out fires. Besides, only the good die young, and I have much to atone for...

Just sat down to watch the local evening news, and KRCR, the Redding ABC affiliate, has gone almost 100% to coverage of the Carr Fire. The weather people are displaying interesting radar maps of the smoke plumes, and using them to identify the most active fire areas. Right now, they seem to be on the southwest side of the fire, good news for Redding residents.

Very sorry to read about the loss of lives with this fire. The new reports say this fire has done some very unpredictable things.

Redding is almost a hundred miles north of here, so from that respect I have no worries. But all it takes is a careless spark and I'll have a front row seat to a wildfire roaring up the canyon. Always a very nervous time of year here.

Good evening all. 79F for the start, cloudy, calm wind. sky stayed cloudy, trace of rain, moderate south wind, and a high temp of 97F. Bike ride this morning, met up with 2 riders from Gainesville, I rode 61Miles they rode 80. nap after lunch and not much else.

Few here will be complaining at the drop in temperature either, we've had too much of a good thing.

Ron, a couple of weeks back I had a problem with my phone being very slow to charge. Under a magnifiying glass I discovered it was simply caused by a seed of grass lodged in the bottom of the USB socket.

Just as I stepped out the door, I heard a great crash and saw part of the forest shaking...checked it out and a large branch had just fallen off a monster oak tree...no wind, and no rain had started falling...just fell out of the blue...very near where I had been backpack spraying poison ivy the other day.

Awesome that you were around to witness that. Next time you are in the forest you are going to be getting a sore neck from constantly looking up.

Good morning all, 64 going to 81 and partly sunny. Rain of 40% or more predicted through next Sunday. Mowed the grass yesterday, not much else. Plan to take it easy today, will see.

woke up to thunderbooms, light rain out, more rain and storms today, East Coast is awfully wet from all this.
More bursting melons yesterday plus lots of the baby melons rotted. Cantaloupes seem impervious, probably GMO'd to not explode...

Had to pick the Alibaba melon from Iraq as it split too. Thankfully it was ripe, and turns out it's a long gourd shaped watermelon. Which tasted like a normal
watermelon, with lots of seeds. I tried a little and gave the rest to neighbors, who said they would collect the seeds for me.

Brunch guests coming at 10am. Have the place almost picked up, table set, just need to work on melons and later make the waffle batter.

My Q5 arrived at the dealership, three weeks early, at least they underpromised, and of course they are rushing me to close in July next week. I'm in no rush...
Headed in Monday afternoon to check it out and get my Subaru reappraised. They warned me it takes a lot of time to set the car up, so many gizmos today, and that they offer a second training session a week or two later. That makes a lot of sense, particularly with new safety gear.
I need to clean the Subaru this afternoon, at least inside, likely going to be a rainy day.

LS, since the very beginning I have been amazed and in a way disappointed that the medical profession and your job demands forced you back to work
so soon, and your knee doesn't seem to be healing very well. If they had made you stay off it, with PT, (not sure you know how to stay off it, and I mean that seriously, I can't sit down either...) I think it would have healed and been fully operational in two or three months. Instead part duty always involves doing something you shouldn't, since
you try to help out since you are right there...does that ring any bells?

I always thought the recovery time for these injuries is much longer than insurance companies and bosses everywhere hope they are.
So conscientious employees try to get back to work too soon and keep hurting themselves and perhaps aggravating damage to a point where
long term permanent injury with reduced capabilities are discussed.

Now the boss can say stay off it, and the insurance company can say stay off it, but, but, but
when you have that nice shiny blue tractor calling out to you, are you really going to stay off it?
And even with hydrostatic, how do you avoid pushing down pretty hard on pedals?
Or is this considered light therapy? I like that idea.

of course if you have kids, how can you stay off it? Crutches...or for certain hard cases,
must push a walker for three weeks.
But Doc, I pushed my walker right to the tractor steps.

LS, heal fully, and don't get pushed around. Hopefully not in a wheelchair....

Out the door for full day of fun...trimming,mowing,dump run,critter food,more mowing.
Today.. couple hours trimming soon,quick trip to town,check game cams,than kick back.
While mowing late afternoon one of the two fawns decided to make stand against the mower,fawn would run out from the woods stop 20' of so in front of the mower puts its head down and tail up... 3 times,than run back into woods join its mother.:confused3:

Well time to get headed outside,least little cooler and less humidity.

64 going to 85, maybe storms...only a sprinkle yesterday.

Did some string trimming, and mowed again yesterday. Had a red fox hanging around all day. Plan to wear the backpack sprayer around today. Might do some target practice.

Just as I stepped out the door, I heard a great crash and saw part of the forest shaking...checked it out and a large branch had just fallen off a monster oak tree...no wind, and no rain had started falling...just fell out of the blue...very near where I had been backpack spraying poison ivy the other day.

Such things are pretty common out here. Chico State University has many large oaks on Campus, and almost every year someone is badly injured or killed when a limb drops unexpectedly on a sidewalk or parked car. Down in the SF Bay Area, there was a park where I’d ride my mountain bike, and in the parking lot was a huge Valley Oak. All of the area under the tree was roped off to keep people from parking or even walking under it. When I’m out camping, I’m very concious not to put up a tent under trees of any size or kind. Can’t think of a worse way to wake up than the sound of splintering wood, then, nothing?:shocked:

When I was a little boy my sister made a pet out of a rooster. It was jealous because she paid attention to me. As long as she was there it would just get between up but if she was not there I would be running. Finely dad got tired of it and gave it to a very hungry family that lived nearby. My sister was mad and shouted at the little boy, "You ate my rooster" He replied, "No Mam, He runded away." Ed

When we bought our current home 12 years ago, I was a bit surprised to hear a rooster crowing south of us every morning. And it wasn't long before 2 little girls, probably under 10 years of age, came ringing the doorbell one day asking for signatures on a petition to allow them to keep their rooster. This town still has some "country?" places, cattle, horses, goats, etc. But there's also a city ordinance prohibiting roosters; hens are OK, but not a crowing rooster. Anyway, I never heard the rooster again. Personally, I kind of liked hearing the rooster crow; I grew up with that sound, but I guess I can understand some people not liking it.

Thanks Buppies, guys, Have 3 more days of the 6 weeks of antibiotics and then in about a week or two will go in and get tested again. I have had this infection for a couple years and had to wait for it to get bad before they could figure out what it was. Hard to cure because of low blood flow in the prostate. Am much better than I was but not as good as I had hoped. Buppies, Prayers for your surgery and no more spots to work on. Ed

Boy...just reviewed my credit card statement...grrrrrrrrrrrr

The American Airlines flight from Burlington VT to National airport was cancelled due to the heavy weather in the mid-Atlantic area on Tuesday, 24 July. So, the travel agency transferred my flight to United...which had no flights available in the timeframe required. The travel agency then moved me to Delta, which did work out OK.
However, United charged me $908.80 for a flight that wasn't available....I have no idea (at this point) who authorized the charge. Calling United, they have no record of me, or the charge...but it's on my credit card statement.
I've filed a dispute, of course....very frustrating!

Not much done yesterday. Running around, saying goodbyes to friends relocating, moving woman around. Sigh. Have to double up today on the run-in. Window for outside work is small between the heat and rain. Wife now wants concrete floor. I'll frame that out, but will go with original plans first, then if it is not up to snuff, will pull the boards out. Need to "finish" last of framing. Metal should be here by end of next week.

Raw material prices are nuts.

Oh, I need to mow some more grass today. Too wet now, maybe before the rain shows up. LOL.

69 outside right now, heading to mid 80's with increasing chances of rain.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 55° with bright sun this morning. Heading to 82° with a few clouds. Got fields cut yesterday. While i had bucket and flail mower on tractor. Took a shot at pine stump. Couple of serious pushes with bucket broke it loose. But 2 roots running out from stump are still connected. Plus those roots took down the garden retaining wall. More work to put on list. Not sure which project I am going to tackle today. NASCAR in afternoon.

Deoxit works great on iPhone lighting connectors. 5C did not skip a beat during 3 hours of use. My old 5 iPhone would not charge. Sprayed a little Deoxit on a cotton swab. Used the swab to clean off connector. Then while still wet inserted connector in phone. This morning I hooked up phone to charger. Magic, phone charged. I use these 2 phones to play my music library into headphones. I was ready to throw headphones of iPhone away. Eric your are close on something getting into connector. But I could not see anything. These phones take a beating while in my pocket doing projects. They do not receive or send calls.
