1) Auto Stop, when your engine purposely dies at a red light. Wears out your starter, and your battery gets drained. Efficiency loss reality blows this theory out of the water. The motor has to work harder once you take off to recharge the depleted battery.

With modern oils, and manufacturing being able to hold great quality tolerances, car engines should last 300,000+ miles easily without major problems,

On my Prius, there is no starter motor per se, it starts the engine with
a motor generator that is always connected. It uses the high voltage battery that is charged by regenerative braking, using energy that would normally be converted to heat as it wears out the brake components. My last one had 150k miles when I changed the front brake pads, and even then, it was because they were off to change wheel bearings, they were still serviceable. The rotors were never changed, I traded it in with 275k and it didn’t burn a drop of oil. So technology can work, if it’s properly implemented, but that is a big IF. And in the case of the Prius it was not done to satisfy a government mandate, but rather to explore a new market.

My 1976 Chevy Impala got better emissions reading and better mileage once I disabled all the emissions crap (except for the gas tank charcoal filter), advance the timing by 3 degrees, and vetted up the 2GC carburetor from #50 to #52 jets.

my 1993 Caprice wagon with the 350TBI got 30MPG on the Highway, fully (actually over-)loaded on ethanol free gas. But it was considered a “clunker” by a certain someone in DC and too many of them were ruined with isinglass down the intake then crushed.

🫤
In those days the auto makers just added on pollution stuff instead of a redesign of the total engine system. Had a new 1979 Impala that was completely weighed down with power robbing equipment. I did the same thing took it all off put on headers and dual exhaust and retuned the engine. Performed a lot better. Also change the carb to a Carter 4 barrel performance carb

50 going to 74.

Buppies, your new visitor looks like a nice one. Good name, too.

Mostly, good luck on your engine repair.

Don, beautiful potatoes. Can't find 'em that nice in the store.

Got my Echo string trimmer 58V battery working again, but think it is quickly dying...also checked their website and seems that it, and its series of tools have been obsoleted...so no use paying $180 for another one from a sketchy online seller. Every other cordless tool I have uses the same DeWalt batteries, which seem to last much longer, so can replace with a new trimmer and battery for about the same price...just worried that the DeWalt 20V won't have the torque that the Echo 58V has. DeWalt makes 60V series tools, too, but then takes different batts and charger.

Did some old style garden and flower bed work yesterday using my all time best tool...a simple heavy hoe I've used since I was a teenager...galvanized steel pipe handle, strong steel blade. Seems like with all the tillers out there, these old tools don't see sunlight often enough. This was the only tool I used in making gardens until I was in my 30s. Maybe that's why my back hurts a little this morning.

When my father stopped driving, I took over his 1984 Caprice wagon. He only used it locally, I travelled a lot. It had the FI305 engine, which was a complete dog - it was underpowered and I found I had to keep my foot down on the accelerator a lot more than with any 350 I owned, whether it was backed by a 700r4 or a slushy 350. In something like a Camaro or MAida it is fine, but not in The Family Truckster…

We loved our old 1965 Volvo P544 when we arrived in California and drove it all over the place. No pollution equipment and just a basic engine with two SU carbs. Simple and easy to keep up and fix

Good Morning
It’s 45 and might make it to 70 under fair skies today.

Yesterday, we made a Costco run, got some more diet peach Snapple for Drew’s visits amongst other things.

Got a batch of small shores done, rigged up the extension pipes on the blower and cleaned the gutters out. That big cherry tree sure makes a mess with the beautiful blossoms. Made it the theater to pick up more tickets, we have the six center seats in the second and third rows. Arguably the best seats in the house.
Loaded feed into the bins in the barn, tested the fence wire stapler to make sure everything is set for Wednesday’s fence party. Might even have a surprise guest. Got the trash and recycling gathered and down to the street, played with Zoe made some progress on the little plane and called it a day.

This morning will start out with some leftover broccoli bacon quiche, then another neighbor that is a pilot but doesn’t stay current is coming to pick me up, we’re going to fly his plane to Philly to pick up the crew for the citation and take them to the service center in Stewart, NY to pick it up. It will be good for him to get out, and helps us out, as both turboprops are still in the shop, so I’m running out of rides…..

When that mission is complete, it’s back on the little airplane.
No music tonight.
