Morning all, 71 going to 87 and cloudy.
Had enough rain last night in a short period of time that the roof leaked around the fireplace, again

My Jeep is dead, think it's ignition switch, will need to get it flatbedded to repair place.

Did get the hedge trimmer out and took care of some vines and the pine that is in front of the gazebo. I can see the entrance to the gazebo again!. Finished as the rain started.

I hope today is better than yesterday for everyone.

Need to pack for the big trip,

Good Morning!!!! 53F @ 6:00AM. Areas of fog early, becoming sunny this afternoon. High around 75F. Winds W at 10 to 15 mph.
Now compare that to the Yankee Hill forecast, where I'm headed today:
Plentiful sunshine. High 97F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph.
Ugh.

Van is packed and ready to go. I did the usual pre-trip stuff yesterday, cleaning the windows, checking tire pressure and oil level, and because I'd recently rotated the tires, re-torqued the lug bolts. Odd that one side was OK, the other moved a little.

had upstairs geo unit off last night. fired it up this morning. It started cooling a little, then stopped. When it stopped the compressor had stopped.. compressor pretty noisy, loud buzzing. started noticing that a few days back right before it stopped working right. My guess is Either freon problem or compressor, but i'm no expert. G, Y1, and O lights lit on the board.

been harvesting water from downstairs AC condensate. Haven't tried the HF pump yet.

Good morning all,

The Great Big Boy Locomotive chase was a success!!

A friend of mine and I did a crazy thing yesterday of driving over 1,000 miles to pick up a trailer in Utah and return back to Nevada. We were trying to sync up our driving schedule to connect up with Big Boy-- and it worked!!

On the return trip, we pulled into Elko, NV, about 7:15pm. 15 minutes after Union Pacific said Big Boy would have departed. We had been watching for it on the rails alongside the freeway-- presuming we had missed it-- then we got to the tracks and there it was!!

Big Boy started rolling about one minute after we arrived. This was so odd-- we wound up timing it perfectly even though we arrived after it should have departed. It was almost like it was timed and waiting just for us. A real treat in a cramped day of driving so many miles.

Big Boy is massive. The engineering, the restoration, the sight, the sounds of the steam and the whistle is awesome to see. Reminds me of the era where American might was brought full bear to get things done. I have some good video and if I can figure out how to post a video I will do that.

It is hard to overestimate the size of that thing, over a million pounds

nice breakfast with old friend, helped him jump his ancient Avalon, his second car, with dead
battery. He was all set to pull out his jumper cables and I smiled and said no need Jim
out came the lithium jump starter and he was plain amazed that little thing could start his car.
He asked me to send him a link on Amazon so he could get one. Just have to remember to take it out of car and charge
it every six months or so.

sprinkled a little this morning, but ran car through car wash in Newtown, nice senior discount is a full 20 percent and drops
full service price down to 23 bucks. I was the first guy there, and I think fifteen wiper downers attacked my car.
They do everything, door sills, etc. They do my windows better than I do.

reminds me of a car wash issue many years ago. they had one guy whose only job it was to do windows inside.
But he couldn't help himself swiping along the very dirty door sill while he was at it.
Of course that transfers to next window. Really dumb.
When I pointed it out gently I was reminded once again
of the old Amish wisdom

haircut scheduled after lunch, not many hairs left... almost getting to be a comb over and then
the big decision...drum roll, do I cut it all short? Both my barber and his boss said not yet.
So thin it doesn't provide much dent protection any more, have to wear a hat for that

Good morning! Low of 54°, heading up to 85°. Partly cloudy now, more chances for t-storms. Yesterday was disappointing rain wise.... a storm just skimmed by us, we got 0.04". The same storm, 2 miles away, caused a lot of flash flooding. I-40 in the area had to be temporarily shut down.

Maybe we'll get a bit more today, I didn't run the drip irrigation yesterday anticipating getting a good amount of rain. Going to hold off again today.... I hope that's not a bad choice.....
If a plant dies over not getting a drink for a couple days... well it was 'on the edge' anyway.

Successful garden tractor repair! Found 3 issues: 1) The seal where the carb mounts to the manifold was loose and sucking in some air.
2) There is a short 2" hose going from the valve cover to the diaphragm fuel pump. The hose was very loose at the pump nipple. A clamp cured that.
3) The fuel filter was too close to the block and cylinder head causing the fuel to boil in the filter which resulted in a vapor lock.

Took longer to take off the covers and then reassemble than it did to fix the problems. At least it didn't cost me anything. I briefly searched for replacement engine.... WOW- $2500. Then looked at used garden tractors. The ones with similar specs going for $4-5K, and they were just glorified lawn mowers. That's not happening.....
I'll continue to repair and keep this one going until I can find a true older garden tractor or a SCUT at a reasonable price.

RNG, thanks for the solar explanation. Similar to the programs here. We just had our highest electric bill -- $268. Usually around $160, but the A/C sucks down those electrons really fast! My biggest issue with the companies here is that they will only do roof mounts. I will only accept a ground mount.

Thomas, I bet the Mrs. wasn't happy with the visitors. Cute, but take your cuteness elsewhere... Beautiful pics!

Dennis, hope you get more rain.... I can't believe we got more than you. How did the farm withstand during the past storms?

Plowhog, thanks for posting the Big Boy pic. Must be awesome in person. I was following the schedule hoping for it to come closer to our area. I would drive 3-4 hours to see it. Any recent Rigby pics?

Drew, I hear you on the head dents.... I usually have at least 1 or 2 'dents'. When I'm involved in a big project, I may look like an old car that just participated in a demolition derby!
I haven't had more than an 1/8" of hair for the last 12 years. I have gotten into the habit of wearing my boonie hat for a little protection. I should wear a hard hat.....

A couple errands today, then maybe some shop surface mining. I'll sort out some lumber for a small project that's been on the list. Going to enclose the bottom of a shelving unit to hide the router and fiber optic control box. Got to keep the wifey smiling......

Ken, you need to get a Toyota Highlander and get rid of that unreliable jeep.
Jeeps are wonderfully fun but historically have very high repair rate.
I always thought that style was nice. Now Jeep makes 110k Escalade clones.

it's kinda rubbery to drive but a Highlander hybrid is an excellent car and no one does hybrids better than Toyota.
That would be about the size of what you have.
I'm partial to 3 year old CPO cars. Usually knocks a third off the price and still comes with long warranty.
Of course, reality then sets in, kid off to college, maybe you can send him off with the Jeep and you get something
else
