Good Morning
59° and grey this morning supposed to get to 70° without rain. Yesterday was dismal all day we got just over 1/2” of rain for the whole day.

Yesterday’s Costco run went really well. We took advantage of the early opening for “Executive Members”, and it really made a difference. We parked near the entrance, the store was nearly empty and no wait to checkout.

I was able to accomplish what I wanted to get done on the computer, spent some time figuring out the bass line to Santana’s version of Black Magic Woman, hopefully put that to use on Friday night.

Today starts with taking Zoe to the vet for her checkup and shots, it’s always a test of her training in the waiting room as new people and animals come and go.

I see that Amazon says my last Mesh access point is out for delivery, so that will be on the afternoon to do list. I’ve also got replace some gate posts in the pastures. I have the posts and a hydraulic auger for the tractor, so that shouldn’t be too bad. Today might be a good day to smoke the pork shoulders as well.

Lots to choose from, be interesting to see what really happens.

Good morning, the low is 56 and going up to 79°F. Wind ESE 4 mph. Foggy right now but sunny later today.

Got dump/town run today and pick up a package at the courier depot. Then turn the wood pile. After that it is back down the rabbit hole.

Have a safe day all

great morning fog pic Arly. All those kids keep the town jumping, probably a little too much at times but
just good to have the young around. So I can see how old I look...
actually high school girls look like college girls to me so college girls must be ?
probably a good work force for local businesses too.

started to rain lightly outside, yes I needed a fleece this morning too
headed to Home Depot to get some mums shortly; no sense driving in commuter traffic unless I have to.
I want to wax the rv but can't do that til it dries out. So looks like a muddy mum day.

Good morning TBN!!
68 this morning w/high in the 80s. It's cooled off a bit but hard to tell because humidity is still bad.

Posting a bit late this morning because my glasses broke first thing. Not sure how the day will go when it starts like that. They are under warranty so not a big deal. Been an optician for 50 years so I have lot's of backups. Just not current Rx.

Spent yesterday loading 4 FEL buckets from various areas with rock and placing by hand. Still needs some but not enough to justify nearly $1k for another dump load. 8 yards of concrete coming Sat and I can't wait. Been a year almost since Helene took my bridge out and I am done !! with working on it.
More of the same if I can get my rear in gear. Pretty sore today!
Will need to make a run for diesel before I can fire up the tractor so that will be first thing.
Agenda today is just like yesterday.

Already had a second cup.
Everyone have a great and safe day!!

Morning all, 60 going to 73 and light rain.
Worked late, more stress with the Uncles situation and people taking advantage of him....

M7040 - putting me to shame as I have not spit any for the winter yet, need to get going on that as soon as it dries up out there.

Back to the day job, 2 days until son is dropped off at college.

Be well,
Critters left me one tiny mottled pear from the two trees.

This is one of the transplant trees and is about 7 feet tall now and doing well.

Don thanks for info, what holds the tofu and sweet potato together?
The sweet potatoes are cooked and mashed and bread crumbs are added along with lemon juice and fresh rosemary, garlic and onion powder, and coconut aminos.

Good morning! 75˚F heading to the 90s with cloud cover and a chance of rain. We had another 1/2 yesterday bringing August rain total to 1 inch.

3 mile walk this morning, swim this afternoon, water temp 84˚ this morning.

Cardiologist visit went well, blood test normal, 12 lead EKG normal no other test recommended. Next visit in a year.

Got the new carburetor for Sophie’s Scag. Will get that installed today. That solenoid piece at bottom was sticking.
Glad you got it going. Some carbs have a solenoid valve on the bottom to shut off flow in case of turn over.
I have just taken them out and cut the little plunger, defeating their purpose on our flat land. You can get them on Amazon cheap if we are talking about the same thing.

folks along Outer Banks in NC on Hatteras Island have been evacuated including all the rvs.
several houses on stilts near Rodanthe expected to go into water. That whole area is where they had to build an entirely
new concrete highway out over the bay because the road near the beach kept washing out.
Every time it storms costs a lot to clean it up, mountains and mountains of sand in spots.

will be fun to watch a beach camera today.
this site has a lot of them.

ahhhhhhh, I sure hope so, we shall see
I looked and the surf is in "frappe" mode. My BIL's company may get called back to put sand back on the beaches. They did Nag's Head a while back.

Taking mom back to Heart Hospital for an internal ultrasound of her heart. They have to put her to sleep for the procedure. She's doing fairly well. Wish she would do more PT.

Prayers for our team, and peace in Ukraine and ******.

Ken, yes all the kids are coming back to campus. Right now their parents are moving them in and walking the campus to see where their classes are.
We have 17,000 new freshmen starting Monday. Our degree has 80+ newbies, which are sophomores starting.

I make it a habit to introduce myself to the student and parents, telling the student they can come talk to me if they need to talk.

Son wanted to go try out his new tennis racket yesterday at 8pm. We only got about 15 minutes of playing before it got to dark to see the ball. He says he loves it. Hope he keeps that frame of mind. He's having to play ladder team with his classmates to establish the pecking order. He's 3rd or 4th on the boys' list. I told him a goal would be to contend for first by the end of the year. It will take hard work and dedication. They call this "Fall Tennis" which means that other students will come onboard for spring tennis as they finish their current sports like volleyball or football. He needs to work on changing his grip depending on forehand or backhand which creates top spin.

Mostly, that deer is at the farm.

overcast here, must have gotten a few drops of rain, deck is wet, but nothing shows on the gauge. Like last night, was raining a mile from the house, but none here. just enough sometime to get everything damp. It's been 2 weeks since i mowed, but wet right now.

started scanning more of my parents slides I brought back from the farm. Still quite a few I never did. Here's one of me in 1989 on top of the house installing a TV antenna, my youngest brother with me, by next older brother standing on porch roof. Prior to this the TV antenna was on a pole out in the yard. Dad sitting on a block of wood by the cellar doors. My sister who as since passed away has hands in her back pockets.
next pic is current view, those flowers have taken over everything, have to keep chopping them back.

BEF - glad you found some pictures. Make sure your family knows where they are and it's great you can scan them for everyone.

My Dad many years ago asked my brother to send our pictures to him so he could annotate them.
We have looked at his house multiple times and they are nowhere to be found.
Always wondered if his GF just threw them out.
So no pictures from when I was about 4, him 8, until late high school. No vacation pictures, nothing.

I told my family i took them to scan. I usually return them, but now, might just hold onto them. I asked the family who would want the very old pics from my Great Grandmother, taken late 1800's into early 1900's. I have scanned those, but would like someone interested in family history to take them, as I doubt my boys will be interested.
Most of the pics from the 70's were taken with very bad cameras, but in the 80s they got better.

The water line company at the farm brought in equipment today to put in another water line crossing for us. I took tractor down tuesday, saw it wasn't done yet. They bury a culvert and put the pipe through the culvert so we can get over it. This pipe is like a big garden hose, if they don't pump, it will lay flat and you can drive over it. In this pic the orange is the end of one of the crossings, the new crossing is further down this line.

on this day nine years ago I was seriously pissed at a big black bear in Washington NC.
wrecked front of my truck night before after dinner with friend, luckily able to drive home and did a little temporary
fender repair with the Kubota
hopefully never do that again.
that was most expensive dinner yet with a 1000 deductible
this gen Ram has frame rails all the way up to the front, just bunted that bear off with a loud metallic twang
of that metal bumper getting rung pretty well

69°F and .65 inches rain

Another good day mowing yesterday, just not as much as anticipated. Went out as soon as dry enough and made progress A couple hours. Took a break for lunch. Just as we were sat down to eat got a txt from LA friends asking to meet them for early dinner, and their treat. Would have been impolite to refuse. Do lunch turned into just a break as I figured I could get another couple hours mowing. Except I didn’t. Mowing back out by the road and one of my neighbors pulls up. Not a short visit. Dwayne is pretty excited he just pulled the switch on a new Silverado EV. Should get it next week.
Then I decided I need to leave earlier in order to refill diesel. Factor in time for a shower, mowing over for the day.

Strange day ahead as we pickup Canadian friends for airport later this morning. Maybe I’ll squeeze an hour this morning.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

73.5F and cloudy @ 13:45, calling for a high of around 73F. Sun may make an appearance later today.

Headed out yesterday to go work in the garden and as soon as I got out there it started drizzling ... 🤬

Hung around long enough to collect up a 5 gallon bucket of produce that needed to be picked … including a couple of monster zucchinis:

IMG_3842 copy.jpg

Then came on back inside and worked on moving frozen produce out of the freezer in the refrigerator into the chest freezer and getting that organized.

Made some interesting discoveries in the refrigerator freezer once it was unpacked enough to actually find things.

Got a bill paid after that.

Then moved into trying to troubleshoot the vacuum sealer. Not much luck there … the unit occasionally indicates it’s at least getting power by beeping … it’s kind of random … but doesn’t go into normal operating mode and cannot be used.

IIRC, the deal on the acquisition of this unit was kinda screwy: at the time we were considering picking one up (but hadn't researched them) Woman was talking to Her neighbor lady friend. She ended up going over a visit and when She came back She announced that a vacuum sealer had been ordered from Amazon and would be here shortly.

Supposedly it was “just like” the neighbor lady’s (... but a different no-name Chinese brand … 🙄) … and it had been ordered on the neighbor lady’s Amazon account … 🤬

So now we have a non-working product … which should still be under warranty … which we have no purchase record for.

Neighbor lady friend was just trying to be “helpful” … but just waaay too complicated.

So I ordered a Nesco unit which was about triple the cost but very well-rated, from a US-based company with a 1 year warranty and which will be here tomorrow.

I ended up prepping all the okra (including the previously picked older stuff), digging out the Presto Fry Baby and cleaning that up (somewhat), and locating a cord for it.

Deep fried the okra after breading it, along with 2 Shrimp cakes and 2 Crab cakes for dinner.

Left the fresh, just-harvested okra for The Woman which She had along with the leftovers of the last Hello Fresh meal She had made the day before. The okra got Her seal of approval and She ate all of it ... (y)

The drizzle continued on and off throughout the evening. Not enough to be significant but it will keep the grass green.

Agenda for today:

Back to watering in the garden.

Then get Water Buffalo refilled.

Some maintenance along the back fence line.

One of the smaller Rose of Sharon's is now blooming:

IMG_3840 copy.jpg

... different color than the largest one, which is still going strong:

IMG_3841 copy.jpg

Hope everyone is having a decent Thursday ... (y)

Dump/town run done. Left my license at home.

Swapped buckets and put some more dead grass on the compost pile along with the peach pits. Turned the wood pile for the last time this year.

Got the medical form for my class 'A' license in the mail. It felt really good to crumple it up and chuck it in the garbage. IF I don't do the medical my license will be downgraded to a 'G'. Boo, hoo. LOL
Last January, I got the notification that if I didn't do the written and road test in a class "'A' vehicle my license would be downgraded to a 'G'. I didn't do it. So I have been driving around with a class 'A' license that has already been downgraded to a 'G'. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
I went on the MTO website, punch in my license number and it comes back as a valid 'G' license.

I have digitized a lot of the still pictures my g-mother & I took from 1955 and up to 1970. G-mother took 35mm slides and I did 35mm pictures. I started with a Kodac Brownie box camera with 127 film then upgraded to G-Mothers Argus twin lense reflex with 620 film. After she died I inherited her Ziess-Ikon Contaflex S (U.S. model)
and I bought a Contaflex S (European model), mainly for the extra lenses. Today you can get these cameras for less than $500.oo, but back in the 50s & 60s they were worth a couple of grand.

Back down the youtube rabbit hole for the rest of today.

I've been thinking about my memorial talk tomorrow morning about my MIL.
Her son said he cannot speak, too emotional. So I'm the leadoff speaker.
Other daughter decided not to come, creating huge upset
with brother. Other daughter, my late wife, will be with me in spirit.
this is the end of a promise I made twelve years ago to wife on her death bed, look out after her Mother.
And I have, and I will, all the way to getting her buried in national cemetery not far from Ken's home, in a beautiful
area that likely used to be a big farm.

and then, most likely, I will never hear from these folks again.
but meanwhile it makes me wonder what will be written about me.
How will I get described in two paragraphs or less?

actually simply think I'd like to be remembered as a good man.
guess I'd better live each day trying to be one.
not hard to do if one can be kind.
most bad stuff comes from a lack of kindness

part of what I'm reading tomorrow is a passage from the Book of Solomon, which my late MIL wanted read.
I find it a little dark and hard to read, refers to "he" but doesn't capitalize it, so I 'm trying
to emphasize the right meaning. DIL gave me the tough reading for sure.
I also have my own thoughts, all of which have been run by their family so no surprises and
no overlap with DIL. And then a chicken lunch at the Plumsteadville Inn. Haven't been there in 30 years.
Hydrangeas from my front bushes will be decorating the luncheon tables.

and then I'm done, really done
