Your bed sounds built pretty heavy to start, usually the purlin cross pieces and channel frame are all about twice as heavy in a dump version. I'm going through this looking to convert a trailer I have to dumping, I think it was a flatdeck on a straight truck years ago. The frame isn't a deep enough section to do this, it would fold up. Going to cut off the heavy 5" channel and replace with a light 8" channel.
Looking at the weight, I was surprised to find half my trailer weight is the 2.5" hemlock deck. I may skin it with expanded mesh or diamond plate to cut the weight down.
