Usually a high pitched whine is the starter not
fully engaging,,,just a thought.

How long is your hose? With my 9000iH it took a few seconds of cranking but fired right up using the supplied hose.
Mine actually takes more than a few seconds for the line to clear. I hold it open until I clearly smell propane. After that, it instantly starts.

PS - I LOVE being able to run it on propane - No gasoline residue cloggng the carb, no clean-up required. I added an outlet and pressure valve to the propane line coming into the house so I can run the generator for many hours off the main propane storage tanks, if needed.

Any good links/instructions to adding the line and pressure valve? I've a 250 gallon tank that we only use for hot water and use about 30% /year.

Love the idea of dual fuel… but what’s the cost like on LP? My inverter uses 2 gallons of gasoline for 12 hours of use, which is amazing

At low to less than full load, inverter generators are almost always going to be more fuel efficient than gasoline / propane generators and often better than even a diesel.

The best fuel efficiency (specific fuel consumption) for most engines is around 50-80% of load, near the maximum torque, but there are certainly exceptions.

When we build our next home, I plan to include a whole home LP generator since we will be there in our old age.

You might think about adding batteries. That would let the generator run efficiently while charging the batteries, and give you many hours of quiet time with power. You could even add solar...

Sorry, I don't have any instructions. I had the propane distributor install it. They charged $15 (cash) and furnished the regulator valve, fittings, and labor to hook up to my 250gal tank as well but I don't think that's the 'normal' price. They just "happened" to have a used but good extra regular behind their truck seat :)

That was a 10 minute job. They set the pressure @ 12psi.

Are you sure it was 12psi? That seems pretty high for a propane line.

You could be right... I'm just writing from memory. Big Mistake at my age. Leave the pressure setting to the experts.

I just asked because propane pressure is normally measured in "inches of water", where 12 inches of water would be about 0.43psi. (The normal maximum inlet pressure for many of Generac's propane generators)

Another one of those oddball units of measure...

A generator can provide a lot more power, at a much lower cost, than today's battery setups. Especially if you are talking whole home. Solar isn't something I'm interested in, it's very costly. Here it has no ROI even with the tax credit, we have been down that path already.
When we need power, the sun isn't shining and batteries won't keep the heat on. Generators provide instant, bountiful energy, for less than a power wall or solar, by a long shot.
Even a generator has no real ROI, but for the cost of convenience, we think it is worth it.
