1*I do agree though.. with gemini.. both the issues you (happyman) mention go hand in hand.

2*I don't want to be stuck 'defending' myself with a telephone, calling 911, while someone is attacking me.

I*The're inseparable
2*You probably would never make that call as the attacker would most likely have you dead way before you could even reach for the phone.

Trusting your life to 911 in a situation like that would be about like playing Russian Roulette with a bullet in every chamber.

All I would like to add to this discussion is some practical sense. At my place, I have some tempting buildings and vehicles. I have dogs, big guns and small guns. But....

You need to practise your response options. I have rehearsed quite a few daytime and nighttime situations. I come home, "they" are wandering around. I am home, "they" start wandering around. I am home at night, full moon, the dogs light up. Where are shoes, shirt, flashlight, gun, ammo, what lights to turn on or off, which door to exit, what path to take. what stuff will I hit or puncture, any neighbor homes gonna get hit, where is shooting position, etc. I'm telling you you need to scout out your own place to see and hear and practice your confrontation. How to throw down a flashlight to shine them without having them shoot you. Where is a blanket (to throw over one of them after getting them down, where are tie-wraps to contain them (best is one on each arm, then one between each tie-wrap, then one from arms to a leg.

You also need to practice shooting your weapon at night and daytime. How loud is it? what is flash, kickback, one or two hands, aimed or pointed, and at what. What to say, what not to say, how loud to yell it, how to detect how many of them there are, find their vehicle first and disable it. How to strike their fuel tank after a getaway. Flatten tires or start on fire. Where is my lighter.

In my case, a Remington 870 in buckshot being racked up is the loudest recognizable sound that criminals know almost by instinct. If your gonna rack the action, have the right shells, have a flare round on hand, set one off occasionally and approach a stranger with a question: You live here, Pal?

If the answer comes back wrong, a weapon, a subdue, a detainment and a phone call all have to be done. (well maybe phone call is optional, there's always Miss Dig). Still, on a moonlit night, go out and burglarized your own place. You'll at first be horrified at what is there: vehicles with keys, tools, shed unlocked, motion sensors not working, dogs not cooperating, gates hard to open, tripped over a shovel handle (what idiot left that there?). Family member(s) not cooperating or too nosy and loud, Vehicle not ready to chase culprit with, and I'm too tired to worry about it.

The time is NOW. Make sure the judge only gets to hear your side of the story if it comes to that. No warning shots, no sympathy, aim for guts and finish it off. They are they to terrorize you. Don't fall for the female decoy.

Experience is a hard teacher. There are billions of replaceable people in this world, Just think of them as lemons.

Please don't shoot the neighbor's dog, though. That's a real crime.

I'm glad I participated in this discussion. The gun safe is obvious and I never thought of it.

Some great tips on prepairing yourself for as many possibilities as you can think of. I'll do just that.

Let's try to keep politics out of this :)
It's about one of our own getting hurt, not whether we have the right to carry a gun.
Thanks ;)
Happyman it is not about politics per se. A lot of people on this post have made comments about what they would do if they were in the same situation and how they would defend themselves. I am not advocating carrying a gun everywhere you go. I am just pointing out that one of the candidates in this election is on record for opposing a citizen having the right to have a gun in their own home and defend themselves with it. There are a lot of people in the same circumstances that I am. I live to far from a metropolitan area to reasonably expect the Police Department to arrive quickly. I am not saying that the police department in my county do not do a good job but it is a big county and if they are at the other end it is a long drive to my house. If someone breaks into my house or starts loading my stuff up I am on my own for a minimum of 20 minutes if they are in the nearest town. If they are answering a call at the other end of the county that climbs to over an hour. I remember when I was about 14 I heard some dogs barking at the bottom of the pasture. I looked to see whose dogs it was and saw someone with dogs rounding up my dads registered herefords and herding them towards a cattle trailer that was sitting at a hole cut in the fence. I ran inside the house called the police, got my rifle went outside and fired a couple of shots in the air. The thieves got their dogs jumped in the truck and left. I waited until the police got there then went down and started fixing the fence. That was not about politics it was about me having the ability to protect my families property.

Politics is about which political tribe convinces more people than the other political tribe that it will reward the people who vote for it and take from those who don't.

My right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness is not a political issue. It is a life and death issue.

I have several friends who are former Marines--all veterans from the Viet Nam war. Every one of them say no one is going to confiscate their firearms. I am 27 year National Guard 11 bush with no combat time. I hope if the time comes I have the courage to join them.

And again, I too, am sorry for the OP's wounds and hope you heal well.

Tony i think you can get a pretty good one at walmart for about 700 or so. I would get the one with the electric keypad that is what I have and it opens pretty quickly. I will add a story here though so we can remember it is not just small children. My youngest son was around 21 and had a friend of his that had went into the army and had just came home from boot camp on leave before heading to advanced training. At the time I was dating the woman who is now my wife. She lived about a two hour drive from me and we would trade off weekends going to each others house. It was my weekend at her house and I got a phone call about 9am sunday morning. I answered the phone and it was my youngest son. His first question was how is your weekend going. I have two sons and have a few years parenting so I know that when they ask how your weekend is going that means they are going to ruin it. I answered it was going great till you called what is wrong. He proceeded to tell me he had been running around with is friend and his friend had too much to drink so he offered to drive him back to our house to spend the night. Evidently my son let him use his room and had forgotten he had his 9 mm out cleaning it and had not put it back up yet. ( pre gun safe days by the way) Evidently my son had reloaded his gun and had chambered a round. ( a major no no. You can take guns away from children even at 21 ask my son) The guy had woken up and was looking around the room and saw the pistol he picked it up and had his hand in front of it. He pulled the trigger with his hand in front of the gun and shot a hole in his hand. I would have thought that someone who had just finished army boot camp would have known better but evidently not. Thankfully all he did was shoot his hand and not anyone else. The point of this story is that you have to worry about more than just young kids.

:) I am glad to read you are on the mend. It just reminded me about the old say
"Only one side of the story will be presented to the Grand Jury" or the one about "A Dead man does not tell any lies"
