I'm interested in a biometric gun safe for quick access.

Smithfield Armory XD .45 ACP...13 in the mag, 1 in the chamber, so you can miss plenty and still recover. Flashlight on the rail and laser in the slide guide. You could hit a bulls eye shooting any way you want. Feels good in the hand, too.

Biometric safes are pretty cool...that's where I keep mine. Absolutely no way to get into it without one of my fingers. My wife, oddly, doesn't have pronounced enough fingerprints to get in even.

I've actually had to draw it out a few times. False alarms, but reassuring nevertheless.

REALLY hope all is well with Mr. Double Orange. Don't wish things like that on anyone...except the weiner that did it to you! I'd love to see him get ambushed.

Thanks Gemini, I'm hoping that $700 is a typo...I'll check out the websites of a few places. And good story.

edit----yes, Cabela's has a nice draw type pistol safe for $70. Going to order one soon.
tony I apologize I tend to forget about pistol safes. I was talking about a regular gunsafe that will hold 16 rifles plus shelves for pistols and ammunition etc.

I might have to look into the biometric pistol safe that might be a good idea for just a pistol to have it handy. The keypad gunsafe only takes a few seconds to open but with adrenelin pumping and if I was in a situation where time was of the essence that might be a nice addition

You need to practise your response options. I have rehearsed quite a few daytime and nighttime situations.

very true, thinking about "what do i need to do when i ever get in a.... situation" can save you.

Once i fell 5 or 6 meter down. Because i went over this before i got into a situation like this, my first reaction was to put hands and feet down to break the fall.
bystanders said that i acted like a cat... Well i still broke my arm, but at least i didnt smash my head on the concrete.... ;)

We dont have guns for self defence of civillians in Holland, but most small criminals dont have them either... Hard criminals have weapons anyways, but those would have killed you as soon as they see that you attempt to draw your gun... those guys practice a lot and are quicker anyways...
relatively free distribution of weapons has its pros and contras. Over here you cant get a weapon permit unless you join a shooting club... From an insider, i know that shooting clubs report suspicious types that want to join, and its hard to get in....

about this child abuser getting his name and face recognisable on the internet: I hope they allow that in Holland too... some youth carjackers may better their life when they get older, but child molesters can never be trusted for the rest of their life... Our cars are replaceable, our children not...

I hope you heal well and quick, and i hope the sicko gets put away for a long, long time..

This is an interesting topic for me. Apparently a lot of posters have invested in training and weapons to (hopefully) mitigate any attempts to have friends, family, or property compromised...

I live in Rural Iowa. The violent crime rate, based on data provided online, puts the odds of my family (four people) of having a physical confrontation on my property at about 10,000:1.

If I invest in risk prevention for the family for all risks that have a 10,000:1 or greater statistical chance of occurring during the course of a year, I would go broke fairly quickly. Drunk drivers result in 10x the deaths per year. Obesity is probably 100x the homicide rate in Iowa.

My point is that as protectors of our families, a gun only addresses a very VERY small subset of risks we face during our lives. Unfortunately, I have several neighbors who own guns, take a VERY protective approach to protecting their families, and yet don't own a single smoke detector for their home. They also smoke inside the home with children. They can't see the irony of their choices...

My recommendation, when considering steps to further protect your family and property, is to list ALL of the potential risks. Rank them NOT on emotion, but on the likelihood of occurrence, cost to mitigate, and timeframe to complete. There are MANY communities in the US that justify the need to keep a firearm for self protection. Just like there are many states that justify a basement for tornadoes, or fire retardant shingles for forest fires. Its important to consider ALL risks, not just the ones that strike the strongest emotional chord...

Mr. AndyinIowa, you have some great points that merit consideration by all reading.

For my part, I'll offer the following: My wife and children were in a car accident last October. A guy in a jacked up truck, stopped at a stop sign, pulled out and literally drove into the side of my wife's car as she drove past at 55 MPH. Fortunate he didn't pull out any sooner or she would have speared him and lost the "physics" battle...she was in a Land Rover Freelander and he was in a Dodge 3500. His bumper was so high, it mostly hit the passenger upper front quarter and doorframe...hate to think if I was driving and my wife was in the passenger's seat. After being "punted", she was rear-ended by another car before coming to rest in the median, children laughing because of the wild "ride". Got to love children.

My point: I spent $50,000 on the safest car I could find to put my family into...a Volvo XC90. $50,000 I spent on the off chance that lighting would strike twice.

Therefore the $500 I have invested in my gun comes pretty close to meeting your "100 times more likely" scenario since I have 100 times the money invested in automobile safety as I have invested in personal weaponry.

For the record, I have 9 smoke detectors in my home, don't smoke, and have a home security system with cellular backup (in case the phone line is cut) that we use religiously. It is almost never off, even if we are in the house.

We even have those silly ladders you toss out the 3rd story window in case you have a fire and can't escape. How many folks here run "fire drills" in their house? It's a pretty good idea...

So certain costs...and certain controvertial types of protection...CAN fit in the scope of normal home protection and be perfectly reasonable in cost, suitability, and overall risk.

As much as I hate to say it, we live in a world where folks choose to perform violent crimes. It really stinks and I wish it wasn't so. But I don't want to be THE ONE GUY bringing a baseball bat to a the fight. And in that moment, it doesn't matter if I die or if the other guy does...God's Will and all...but I want to at least be prepared. It's a little like having the power go out and not having any flashlights or candles. THAT'S pretty silly...it is so easy and cheap to prepare for these situations, but you don't think about it until the situation is upon you and you SOOOOO wish you had a flashlight.

And since moving to our smaller (100,000 people) town 3 years ago, there have been two families (as in: a household) killed. In one case, they took some chocolate chip cookies and $50...the other, a laptop and jewelry. NOT ME, BROTHER. There's going to be a fight in my house.

Andy, I agree with you about the smoke detectors after seeing about 15 fire deaths per year in Houston that should not have happened. However in those same years there were about 400 homicides per year (most with firearms).

Iowa might not be as violent as Texas.

You would think the statistics would put a rural area safer but if you take my closest 10 neighbors Only one FAMILY was murdered in the last 15 years. You think about that when something wakes you up in the middle of the night. Firearms are for piece of mind and a vital form of protection.

Tony,

The NRA sells a nice biometric wall mounted pistol safe.

Remember it is your right to own a gun but it is your responsibility to know how to use it properly. If you don't have the time for the training and re-training maybe you should think of something else.

There are a lot of things you can do to increase your families security some of them are in your head.

I'm sure we all know people who shouldn't have firearms. We need to take a sober moment to be sure we aren't one of them. A firearm used wrong can get you into more trouble you would ever want.

Be safe out there.

txdon - Texas and Iowa are definitely much different! In 2005, for example, we had 38 statewide homicides. The same year we had 40 farm related deaths, (about 20% of them were kids).

This year to date 30 people have died in fires in Iowa. Not to mention all the times a farmer has shot someone for smoking (we have a new statewide smoking ban for public places)...
