Got Ambushed Last Night and Shot!

This really is a great discussion. I still sure hope Mr. Double Orange is OK.

Yep Kieth in space this is the 2orange thread. The big question I have is: How did he know the person that shot him??
Was it random or an acquaintance?

Funny-- I read back and I don't see where anyone concluded you didn't have guns:confused:

I agree.. i didn't see anyone say that he didn't own guns...

I kind of like the idea of having something that will make me not have to tackle a poisonous snake close enough that if i miss him (like with a shovel or something) he might get a shot at me.

Hitting a snake with a pistol is a lot harder than you might think. Load it with shot and you lose the ability to use it on anything but snakes.

Plus, the snake will continue to wriggle around even if you have killed it with a shot. The most dangerous time is when you are inspecting it trying to decide if it is dead or just wounded.

I am a pretty fair pistol shot, but vastly prefer a shovel for snakes. If I chop the head off, I know for sure it is dead, and all I have to do is wait for a little while to put it in the snake cemetery (garbage can), preferably with the shovel.

. My point is that as protectors of our families, a gun only addresses a very VERY small subset of risks we face during our lives. Unfortunately, I have several neighbors who own guns, take a VERY protective approach to protecting their families, and yet don't own a single smoke detector for their home. They also smoke inside the home with children. They can't see the irony of their choices...

My recommendation, when considering steps to further protect your family and property, is to list ALL of the potential risks. Rank them NOT on emotion, but on the likelihood of occurrence, cost to mitigate, and timeframe to complete. There are MANY communities in the US that justify the need to keep a firearm for self protection. Just like there are many states that justify a basement for tornadoes, or fire retardant shingles for forest fires. Its important to consider ALL risks, not just the ones that strike the strongest emotional chord...

I couldn't agree with AndyinIowa more. Most of the people on this forum have chosen a rural life style. One of the things that comes with that is a need for a higher level of self-sufficiency. The fire department, ambulance service or police are not likely to be 10 minutes from whatever could happen. Not to be properly prepared to handle any emergency without dependency on outside help is foolish. Major first aid kit, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, Fire extinguishers, cell phones, emergency lighting and yes a fire arm all seem like reasonable precautions. Not having any one of these could turn a bad problems in to a life threatening one.

I will also add, that having had a significant break-in and loss and another attempt when I lived in CT. One of the things I am adding to my personal list and working on now are security cameras. I was financially hurt (no business theft insurance) by the break in but also I lost a emotional trust in my fellow man. If the police had found the crooks it would have gone a long way to curing both of the repercussions of the break in. A video record of whatever takes place could be a very valuable thing if a break in is attempted or if force is used to protect your property.

Glad you are OK! I mean this is really bad, was there any way you could have prevent it. Or prevent it in the future? Do you keep dogs around? We have three dogs running our land most of the days and nights, just to give warnings. Maybe they would even fight for us, you never know what dog is capable of till the scramble happens.

Again, hope you heal fast and glad you are fine.

The tradition of firearms ownership in this country has nothing to do with snakes and criminals.

Just one thing i want to say: I dont know the origin of this story, if its from the USA or Holland:

The story goes that a granny heard something at night in the living room. went there, took a shot, and flipped the lights on afterwards, to discover she just shot her granddaughter, who was there for the weekend....

Maybe the people that wear guns to feel safe, arent really the ones that should have them, as fear is a very bad advisor....

Although a very unfortunate and sad event, she broke one of the prime rules.
Didn't identify the target.
How can you make an assessment of the force you need to use in the first place ... or if it even needs any as in this case?
IMHO, anyone who shoots in the dark after merely "hearing something" without identifying is irresponsible. She very well could have flipped the lights on first or used a flashlight and still be ready to shoot if that was required. Same with hunters who shoot at movement or through brush without identifying the target first.
That is one of my biggest fears.

actually I have shot snakes several times with a pistol. I have a nice 22 auto that i use for that. I dont shoot for the head I shoot for the body then when it can not crawl off wait and shoot the head. Although the majority of the time I shoot them with my 410 gauge shotgun. Either way the last shot is in the head and I dont worry too much when it is either totally missing or pretty well most of it gone. I still put them in the trash with a stick or shovel or something like that. I also dont shoot non poisonous snakes. If they are no threat to me I leave them alone.

This is a very common story for the people that advocate gun control. The reality is there are a lot more stories of someone being murdered or women being raped or something happening in your home that could have been prevented if you had a gun and were willing to use it than there are of stories like you posted. The majority of people that have guns for self defense have the gun for protection when they check out a noise. They dont have any intention of using it unless they know for sure they have to. I have had a relative staying with me that went in a door that he normally would not have used. I heard a noise coming from the garage and went with my gun to the kitchen where the door led in from the garage. When the kitchen door opened i turned on the lights and yelled freeze. Before I even began to think about shooting anyone I wanted to know who it was and would I have to shoot. I scared the heck out of him but he did not get hurt. If it had been a burglar and he would have froze I would have had him lay on the floor with hands behind his head while my wife called the police. In my opinion you dont shoot anyone unless you or your family are in immediate danger.
