Got my new woodstove put in today

That Hearthstone stove looks very nice. They have a very nice pellet stove available too...when it's time to replace my old Vermont Castings stove, I'll be looking at one of those.
Speaking of Vermont Castings...most of you know I got laid off (along with about 20% of the workforce) in late July, 2013. This was due to the company being sold. Well, they were sold again a couple months back. I hope the new owners can get enough money in there to get some new product lines to market (including a sorely needed pellet stove).

Sorry to hear about the lay off Roy. Been there, done that, and didn't like it too much. Interestingly enough, I also have a pellet stove by Breckwell to heat my finished basement. It is cast iron and looks like a wood stove. My understanding when I bought it was that the shell may have been made by Vermont Castings and the mechanical guts were Breckwell. If you eventually go Hearthstone, you will not be disappointed. I just re-did the chimney and it connects to the top vs. the rear as in the picture. HUGE difference in draw and heat output. Bring on the cold!!!

If you keep looking at Mossroad's ash like that I think an avitar change again may be in order.... <img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/files/rural-living/401573-got-my-new-woodstove-put-th-jpg"/>

Yes, that's what accounts for your sorry looking ash.

But seriously, it's hard to get delivered firewood that isn't a bit on the large side for smaller more efficient stoves and sufficiently dry for good burning. Heavy bark from mature trees will produce more ash too. So, it depends on what you burn. I don't think your ashes, or the amount, look like you have any real problem.

Obviously, Mossroad has a finer ash than Happy does.

Depends on what and how much was burned but both look good to me.

I push all the ashes to one side of the stove, then sift it with a stove shovel with a bunch of 1/8" holes drilled through it to get all of the coals and charcoal out of it. I toss the coals and charcoal to the clean side. I then put the sifted ashes in the bucket, and push the coals and charcoal to the center, add fresh wood, some kindling on the coals and open the air damper. A few minutes later and POOF! We have fire! :) I do this about once a week. I also use locust almost exclusively. Some other woods like sassafras, cherry, but 90% is locust. If you can get it with the bark off, you have very, very little ash.

Somehow I remember her a little bit differently, she's aging well though!
