So guys, what generally happens when you buy a used tractor, put on a used front end loader. And you get old rotten looking hoses, and one breaks after 4 hours of use? It it my baby to fix now, or should the seller, a equipment company by the way, pay for this part? whats the general consensous?

I mean, should they have replaced obvoiously defective hoses on a used loader, or is it buyer beware all the way when it comes to buying farm Equipment?

PS and it leaks in more than one place too. You or I, Me I guess, would think it shouldn't leak. Was I just stupid, or nyeve, can't spell.

Pretty much like buying any used equipment, I suppose. Unless you had a specific agreement that says different, it's sold "as is", for better or worse. But take heart. Replacing a hydraulic line is easy and not outrageously expensive. Just remove the old hose, fittings and all, and take them to a local hydraulic repair shop. They should be able to fix you up with a replacement, maybe while you wait. Consider doing all of the hoses. If one is worn out, the others are likely in the same condition.

Well not to sound like a hard ... but did you ask for or did they offer any warranty, like a week or a month, or 90 days, or was the tractor sold "as is where is"? Was the price so low that they could not make any money by offering even a short warranty.? On the other hand, how long should they replace defective parts, a week? a month? a year? without a warranty obligation. The best thing you can do is chalk it up to experience. Old used tractors almost always require "fixin up" just like old used cars. You will know better next time. And if old rotted hoses is all that is wrong with it, replace them, and go on.

Unless you got it off of a lot with written warranty, its all yours to fix. Hoses arnt particularly expensive. Most loaders only have maybe 8 of them, so it might be smart to replace all at same time. My old JD had several break in the first few years, and i simply replaced them myself without bothering to go to the dealer. wasn't worth the headache to claim warranty on a $20 item (10 years ago). Plus it was probibly my own fault that they got damaged....

I recently added a few hoses to my new tractor, and the smaller 1/2" hoses and end crimps were still only about @26.00 for a 5' hose. The 3/4" hoses were considerably more $$$$. remember to bring the hose in with you.....the angle fittings need to be put on precisely the right angle, as they don't rotate.

IMHO.. it's your baby.

most of that stuff is used and sold as is where is.

I have bought old laoders and had them bust lines the first time I raise dthe bucket.

water proofes the metal and helps the dry skin! :)

I also have bought used machines I was afraid to even lift the laoder to load it on the trailer as I thought 4-5 of them would let go any minute.

cost of owning old iron.

hoses aren't too spendy luckilly.

just my 2 cents..

Cheaper and easier the fix than most things that could go wrong. Now that you know what can happen I would look them all over pretty close. Replace any that look like the blown one. Unless you discussed it with the seller or he made a statement that the hoses were all in good shape I would say you are on your own. Used is used - take the good with the bad.

Well thats pretty much what I thought. Just like a used car salesman. buyer beware. I merely asked was it in good working condition, and they said yes. And it did a good job for 4 hours. hahahaha, I guess i already got my moneys worth on that hose.

That's the way to look at it! Just think if you had rented that tractor for a half day.... it would have probably cost you at least $150-200 for 4 hours. If the hose is less than that, you are still a little bit ahead of the game. But, as others suggested, I would start replacing all the hoses. Then you'll at least have that much out of the way and be ready to deal with the next issue lol!! Good luck with it!

yep.. with the hoses repalced.. then you can start looking at the piston seals.. once those are dry.. then pins and bushings.. :).. then gusset welds.. :) :) painted over cracks.. and uh.. :)

As you take each hose off to bring it with you, label it so you know where its replacement goes. If you don't, you'll likely install one end of a hose just to realize that the other end is slightly too long, too short, has an angled fitting that doesn't line up (because it goes in another place) etc. Also ask the person making up the replacements to keep the new one paired with its old counterpart so it's easy to determine where each goes when you're re-installing them.

This is just something I've learned that makes the job easier. (Yes, I learned it because I tried it the harder way first.)
