Buying Advice Got the itch for a new mower

/ Got the itch for a new mower #41
I thought the original question was about deciding between a Deere and Kubota, then wondering if the BX Kubota would be hard on the lawn. I must have missed the part where there was a question about buying a Zero Turn machine. My glasses are getting old as well as my eyes, I guess.

Bingo.

I wondered how this thread morphed into a CUT/SCUT vis a vis ZT question, considering that the OP clearly stated that he did not want a ZT.

Frankly, the thread drift was warranted IMHO. Sometimes people make decisions without having all the information or because they talk themselves into what they want instead of what they need.

Even if the OP does not want a ZT, others can learn from the discussion. I see no harm in thread drift and the OP can ignore the ZT comments

I assume adults have a spine as well as convictions of their own and can make their own decisions without the use of the internet. It is kind of funny to read how some people think that what they have and use is the absolute best product for all people. I really don't give a rat's azz if someone likes the fact that I mow my lawn with a Kubota BX2380 Heavy with R4 tires. I respect the original poster's decision to buy either a Deere X750 or a Kubota BX2380, I bet he will like either one. Frankly I hate Deere products, I had to run a 2 cylinder John Deere tractor as a kid on the farm, if it had been up to me I would have used the International to dig a hole and bury that schmitty Deere. My spite for Deere aside, I am sure the original poster will be happy with either product. Keep in mind that if the Kubota quits in the lawn and you walk away, you will be able to find it because of the orange color!

As mentioned previously, I use a B1750HST, not a BX. I wouldn't buy any tractor without position control.

Furthermore, my 1750 is equipped with Z bar rear tires (not R-1s, R-4s or R-3s). It has compatible turfs on the front.

It will mow places where your ZTR will not, and do so with less turf damage. Not questioning mowing speed, and never have.

I also plow snow with the 1750.

The only dedicated mower that I am aware of that I believe might be used to mow some of the areas that I mow would be the F series Kubotas and similar FWD machines.

SDT

Lets see a picture of the hills. I have a F series Kubota and my Grasshopper beats it. The back wheel on the Grasshopper are foot or more wider and the engine is 6” lower and the 200 pound operator sits lower. The Grasshopper stability is much better. I’ve nearly tipped the F-series and chickened out on the hills my Grasshopper mows. The Grasshopper also has nearly all the weight on the back drive tires so despite not being 4wd it has great traction. I can push mud with the deck and when that happens you’re pretty much done 4x4 or not. Like I said earlier I had a B7200 and it’s not as good on hills as my Grasshopper. I don’t care that the op wants a BX. I don’t care that you want a B. I don’t care that anyone else wants a tractor mower. Making a blanket statement that ZTRs suck on hills is WRONG. And I’m using a midmount Grasshopper. The front deck grasshoppers are supposed to be the real king of the hill.

Yep. This thread went down a rabbit hole......but that’s fine. ZT’s are great mowers. Really like the Ferris line. Super comfortable. Considered the IS2100z. And then picking up a ATV for running around with a yard trailer for chores. But then I start to think about having now having two things to care for. Stale gas....oil changes and whatever. So back to my original thoughts. Stick with a lawn tractor. The service that I have received from my x700 has been great. But it does suck the gas. I already have a Kubota L3130 for the big stuff so hey let’s go diesel with the mower. I’ll have fresher fuel around and from what I’ve heard better fuel economy so incomes the idea of the x750. Great machine. But expensive for getting just a mower. So then the BX come to mind. For about 100 bucks less I can buy a little tractor that’s 4x4 rear pto 3 point and maybe someday if I desired put a FEL on it. I’d buy it ready with with the valves factory installed. Soooooo. Back to the original question and some have stated the BX mows great and don’t have issues with that heavy of a machine running on the lawns and are getting a quality cut. Reality is I don’t need it. But I desire something new. And am about to drop 13k. I just don’t want to say ****. I’d wish I would’ve just stuck with the JD mower instead of this little beast of a BX.

I've never regretted my BX. Like I say, it mows well enough. I'm sure there are better mowers out there, but it's fast (enough), and cuts well. And it does a shed load of other stuff that dedicated mowers won't do. I'd think carefully about getting the FEL up front - you get 0% on it that way, and it really does make the machine that much more useful. When it's right there and something needs lifting or moving you can just use it. If you have to go over the farm to get the big tractor (and the missus is saying "don't put ruts in the lawn") then you have to get out a shovel and wheelbarrow instead. I'm never a fan of shovels.

Agree with getting the FEL now 0% + the KTAC insurance. But I do remove the FEL for mowing. Much more maneuverable and far less bumpy on my uneven ground.

Why not start a new topic of your own on ZTs? Must almost every thread be hijacked?

It sounds like the OP is only looking for reinforcement in his idea and his mind was already made up. Not saying that’s wrong because I do it too, but there’s not a lot of other point to this thread.

I'm not a fan of the thread drift. To quote the OP's original question:

Does anyone use the BX just to mow? Any issues with that big of a tractor constantly on your lawn?

That is a reasonable question, it's not seeking reinforcement of something he's already decided. And nowhere did he say "hey, I'm thinking about a zero turn v's a tractor, which are better?" He may have a bunch of good reasons he wants a tractor not a ZTR, and how fast it mows or how steep a hills it can go up may have nothing to do with his decision.

He then subsequently said:

Thanks for the replies. Don稚 want a ZT. We like the X700 with a little yard trailer for chores around the place. The BX would do a great job with that especially out in the horse pastures. But it痴 main purpose in life is to mow.

So a ZTR doesn't meet his requirements, unless it's going to do a great job of towing a trailer out in the horse pastures.

To then drift the thread off into why the OP should get a ZTR anyway, because actually they're awesome on hills even though some people think they're not is, well, to me it's a bit disrespectful.

Anyway, each to their own, it's the internet, people can do what they like. Just my $0.05 worth.
