Gotta have a four wheel drive...NOT!!!

Someone mentioned 4WD not having an advantage to slowing down on snow or ice. I beg to differ. My experience is with a manual transmission - you can use compression to slow down more succesfully on ice with a 4WD rather than brakes alone

Not true in the days of ABS. You can cause a "skid" with compression braking.

Assuming compression braking only, 4wd has an advantage over two wheel drive, more wheels to distribute the braking force -> less chance of breaking free.

Either way, I will never buy a car or truck w/o antilocks ever again. That black box is much faster & better than my foot at regulating brake pressure.

What's the point of this conversation anyway?

I agree.

This whole thing started over what a person needs. Well let's start debating everything we don't need then. We could really do just fine with an outdoor john. Who really needs an indoor toilet. While we're at it we don't need air conditioning either. We used to get along without it. I mean heck with the high energy prices let's save some money. We don't need to eat out or go to movies either, heck we don't even need to watch tv. Let's save a bunch of money and time there. Heck we don't even need tractors either. Let's just go back to horses and mules. With all the time we save from not watching tv we'll have plenty of time to work with a team instead of a tractor. This list could go on and on. I can't believe we're even debating the fact of whether or not a person has or needs four wheel drive. Heck we don't need most of the cars and trucks that we have be it 4wd or not. Heck we don't need 99% of anything that we have. It's really a mute point from a post put out by someone who has a grudge against four wheel drive. Now we've got some great guys on this site debating over semantics on a topic that doesn't mean anything. Let's give it a rest.

In situations where I'm trying to stop on ice, I don't just drop down a gear and dump the clutch - I ride it until I feel the wheels grab (of course this is hard on the clutch - but like I said, for emergancy stopping on ice).

As for ABS, I don't feel in control - I prefer a vehicle without it - especially after paying 300$ a rotor for my last brake job (ABS feedback teeth are built into the rotor on my vehicle). Pumping the brakes lightly with a combination of decompression works best for me.

Want a real advantage? Get studded winters. Anyone ever try those tires that have the impregnated crushed walnut shells?

Ranchman,
only fair to respond to you one last time before we do as Richard suggested and quit wasting bandwidth on a topic that hasn't changed anyone's mind, isn't going to, and seems to be starting to disturb a few people.

I didn't think I was being defensive ... but since I was defending my point of view .... I guess ... anyway, whether it was oxymoronic (hey, I'm used to being called moronic /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif ) or not - I was looking for feedback. Although I'm frequently accused of never changing my POV ... I have actually been known to admit I've changed my mind. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif It just takes more than rhetoric.

Actually, I took none of your comments personally ... since it says - at the top of the screen - "off topic and just for fun" ... and also because it didn't say "WingNut (or Pete) ... I think you're an idiot". A discussion, to me, is not a "me too" series of postings and I enjoy them all ... even if I seldom analyze what I wrote to see if someone will read it differently.

Completely objective? Me? Oh sure, yep, you bet. After all, it's not like this is the "off topic" forum .... completely objective Wingnut, that's me.
My defence here (oops, getting defensive here) is that ... as another frequent poster notes, I am the sum total of my experiences. I visit Texas fairly frequently but don't live there. I spent most of my 50+ years in northern Alberta where we have completely different hills, more (and possibly deeper) snow, actual mountains, fewer paved roads (more gravel) (per capita ... I know Alberta is about 5% smaller than Texas), etc, etc, etc. I've lived in the country most of my life and managed to do all that without 4wd. Not having 4wd made me stay aware of conditions and drive to suit them without mechanicaql "advantages". I've seem the majority of 4wd vehicles in town or on pavement, not in the field. I've seen all the premium car makers getting into the SUV and 4wd market because the monies there. That's my experience and the reason that I think most people that own them don't need them. You think that therefore I should butt out ... since it doesn't affect me. Well, I beg to differ (is that ok?) but it does. It affects my insurance rates. The people that have big vehicles to compensate for poor driving habits (WARNING --- this comment is NOT intended to hurt any viewers feelings) drive up insurance rates. People buying trucks for image purposes drive up purchase costs. These things do affect me and therefore give my OPINION a voice.

Did I, at any time, say that I believed people were idiots for owning SUV's, 4wd, AWD, Porsches, or any other vehicle? While I do feel that, in general, too many people use vehicles as identification or image .... that's their business. And if it doesn't overawe me, that's my business.

you still have a lack of respect for the "90%" of folks who buy them for what you see as bogus reasons.
Actually, to be fair about it, I have a lack of respect for "90%" of the folks on the road, since they consistently demonstrate a lack of ability to properly control their semi-guided missiles. But that's just my personal statistic.

OK, defensive shields down, full power ahead.

On to some of your other points.
Are you saying transfer cases don't need to be repaired? Because you've had vehicles with multi-thousand miles sans transfer case repairs, we can extropolate that all transfer cases are now the strongest component of all vehicles? How would I know since I don't own a vehicle with 4wd? Hmm, I don't know ... just because I have a stepbrother with a ranch, a half dozen relatives with farms, neighbors with 4wd vehicles and can read .... well, I guess you're right. Those of us without 4wd vehicles shouldn't have an opinion. I will concede that point. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
What I have a problem with (and I think this has been shown to be pretty consistent throughout my historical responses on TBN) is when an individual posts something only to instegate argument and not to start legitimite discussion (regardless of whether they spout a bunch of stuff about how they are "entitled to their opinion" or not.)
While I enjoy debating, I try to jump in and stick my foot in my mouth only when I have an opinion that has, in my mind, some thought behind it. Obviously, from your comment, I have failed in that regard. You must have misconstrued my "flame away" comment as an invitation to "argue" rather than discuss .... I entered that comment knowing full well that people who owned 4wd vehicles would disagree with me. This would tend to foster more discussion ... but will always inflame some. In response, besides comments about my not having a leg to stand on because I don't drive a 4wd, were comments on uses for 4wd - other than recreational. And I found them all interesting.

ok .... enough beating them dead equines .... I hereby butt my nose back out again /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

That horse would pretty goofy trying to pull my tiller......Come to think of it, I guess I don't NEED the tiller after all /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
But I DO need my 4WD
Camper parked at the Brothers property, with no driveway yet. The first night down there without a 4WD, we had a tractor pull us out, and the 4WD tug us on up in the hills.
"nough said outta me

I've been trying to figure out the point of this discussion.

Is it that NOBODY needs a 4X4? Or is that only 10% of those that own them NEED them? Or is it that the people that live in town and have paved roads NEED them? Or only people that live on top of a clay mountain in Washington state NEED them?

After we determine the point of the discussion and what the CORRECT answer is let us move on to: "Most people do NOT NEED a microwave oven" /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

If somebody buys a 4X4 and NEVER uses it to serve the good of all mankind .... SO WHAT? It's their money and their free to buy whatever they want (the opinion of the Sierra Club and GreenPeace not withstanding). /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I have a problem with those who have 4x and never go off-road. That is not the problem. What gripes my [censored] is that they try to justify it with "I need it because..." which reason(s) are bogus on the face of it. I have no problem at all with someone owning one and using it for nothing but a people transporter or status symbol as long as they are honest about it. The asnwer "I have it because I wanted it" is honest and satifies me. Very few of them are honest tho.

Wingnut,

In the interest in diplomacy, even though I still think perhaps you aren't "getting" my points (could be you or could be my inability to express my ideas/concepts appropriately), even though I could respond to your latest post, I too will "pull back." (Richard is absolutely right.)

Funny thing is that the original poster started this whole thread did it just to see folks "go at it." I knew he was doing this (as he later proved in the other 4wd thread that is now gone), but "bit" anyway and typed a response when I should've just ignored him.

Oh well, I suppose he got what he wanted - the 4th of July on TBN!

Take care.

After reading several of these threads, and participating in a few, it seems to me that a thread about how electronic communication facilitates mis-understandings might be useful. I suspect that there would be many fewer hissy fits if all of us were in the same room talking about these subjects. The non-verbal component plays a major role in communication. On the other hand, I once knew a guy who was able to offend just about everyone he met using words and phrases that were innocuous when spoken by others. But then, he probably just had really bad pheromones.
