Grading scraper - which one?

I've been thinking of purchasing a Land Pride Grading Scraper. Either the GS1572 or the GS2584.

The 72" weighs approx. 600 lbs and is rated for 25-50 hp and the 84" weights approx 822 lbs and is rated for 40 to 90 hp.

My tractor is a NH boomer 3045 rated at 45 hp. Which scraper would work best for me?

I do have a RBT3584 hydraulic rear blade (84") which my tractor can pull full of stone and dirt.

IF you can pull an 84" fine, I'd get that one.

How wide are your back wheels spaced. Because you want something that will at least cover your tracks.

My back tires are just under 6' wide.

I will be using it to maintain my gravel driveway and easement. A little over 1/2 mile long. I also want to use it for leveling dirt in my yard. The dirt is mostly sandy soil.

If I'm not mistaken the GS25 series is the heavy duty line. If you're plans are to occasionally do your driveway it could be a little overkill. I don't have one yet, it's at the top of the list for this spring though.

I'm curious what some of the others here think about having extra width. For a large wide area it would be fine but if you have a 10'(ish) wide driveway would something 7' wide hurt while trying to put a crown on the drive or help.

I looked at a GS2584 this past weekend and can confirm that it's a beast.

Do you have a rake? You really want a rake for a gravel drive and/or spreading dirt/loam. Landpride makes a york rake with a flip-down grading blade that is pretty cool.

I just went through this and ended up ordering a Grademaster Utility 7. It's 7' long and weighs 660 lbs, and was $1100 delivered to Tennessee from them in Mississippi. There is a thread on it down below here in the attachment forum. The LandPride 6' was almost $1800 delivered, but it does have an adjustable blade set from flat to crown and scarifiers. I have a HD Box Blade, so I didn't need something that could do that digging and leveling, I wanted something that puts a crown down.

I guess it depends on how picky you are and how soft the ground/drive is when you do it.

Same as with a tiller.

If you track wider than the scraper, your final pass wont cover the tracks, and you will leave prints (or ruts if soft) that the scraper wont cover. And if your drive is a mudhole and soft like mine once you start working it, it matters:thumbsup:

My Land Pride GS1572 cost me $1,400 total from my Kubota dealer (even got it in orange )

Not only are the blades adjustable up / down, but it has retractable tines for ripping up the dirt if that's of interest.

The blades are also angled to direct material toward the left of the tractor, aka center of the road/ driveway, for crowning. I'm not sure all grading scrapers are made like that.

This thing is big, heavy & strong ... I can only guess that the 2584 would be more of the same brute strength, but also a foot wider - although 6' is pretty darn wide. I think you can pull the 2584 OK, but there may be times when the tail wags the dog a little due to the weight, or traction suffers ... gonna depend on how compacted the material is that you're working with, how moist it is, etc, the same things that affect a 6' model or a box blade.

I have a 72" Befco that I drag behind a L3700SU. The tractor handles it with no problem at all. What ever one you get I strongly recommend getting one with scarifiers. They rip the ground before the blades smooth it out and saves a ton of time. They are especially nice for ripping out pot holes.

I cant say which one would be best for you. But here are a few things to consider.

The grading scraper will pull every bit as hard as a blade the same width. In some conditions harder. You have two blades, not one, both cutting and they are both always full and pulling under a box full of material if it is working right.

The 822 lb 7' scraper gives you 117 lbs per foot of blade which is better than the 6 footer at 600 lbs which gives 100 lbs per foot. The more wt per foot the better. I have heard some say that 150 lbs per foot is good. I have a 5 footer that weight 575 lbs and some times I add 100 lbs to it. But I have no rippers and some very hard packed gravel.

You will be best off with the 7 footer. You can always pick it up if it is too much at the time for whatever your conditions might be at the time. Weight is your friend when it comes to grading. You may want to look around some first before you buy. There are a lot of LPGB (land plane grader blades) out there to look at. Prices vary a lot, but you usually get what you pay for. I personally run a 7 footer that weighs in at 1400lbs, but my tractor is a bit bigger.
