I'm not so sure. A neighbor of mine's a mechanic, and for years only used NAPA (other than dealer-only parts), but he says O'Reillys is becoming his go-to parts store. Price is better, stuff is actually in stock, easier to deal with and comparable quality.
I was a bit surprised myself.
Getting back to the OP's comment (and Moss's reply), another factor that changed is that back in "the day" every corner gas station sold tires and did at least some repair work. Now lotsa luck finding a gas station that's not just a sideline for a convenience store.

The Castrol oil and filters are still just as good as going to NAPA, I dont know what it is but stuff at NAPA is way expensive and always been that way......
And they should for what they cost with 20" tires, but todays frames has to be rust proved to the hill, I mostly blame that on todays frame design.
And whats with exhaust manifolds on trucks in the last 20 years they dont last 100k, was they like that in the 60s? My son has picked up a sideline business of changing exhaust manifolds on pickups, he's got more patience then I do..
